a big disappointment
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/19/08
The Gables Inn is nothing like the promotional pictures and descriptions. It is dilapidated and in dire need of upkeep, refreshment, and restoration. The main building has rugs that are black with dirt...the first thing you see when registering. The breakfast is good if you can take the dirty carpet on the way to the eating area. The breakfast does not make up for the dingy surroundings. We stayed two nights because we had booked (and paid) ahead, and didn't really want to argue with the lady owner, who seemed ready for a quarrel when we asked to see the rooms. We moved two of a party of four from the main building, where hallways and stairs were narrow, making us wonder if we could get out in the case of fire. We stayed in the "carriage house", which had dirty rugs but we did enjoy the fireplace in the cool Sept. mornings and evenings. No used towel replacement or coffee were provided for the second night. To get the tap for the "jacuzzi/shower" to work, I had to stand in the tub and pull with all my might. We did not feel comfortable using the tubs because the dirty rugs and windows did not give us confidence that the jets had been consistently and thoroughly cleaned. Don't believe the pictures! Unless this property undergoes major renovation or they knock it down and start over, don't go. I am amazed that I check the reviews before booking, and only one actually described the true conditions of this Inn. I dismissed that one review as being by someone who demanded perfection. If I had only heeded that one true review...but at least it gave the four sisters who came to Stowe for a reunion something to talk about, and some of the descriptions and comments gave us great belly laughs...guess I can thank the shabby, old Gables Inn for that.

Charming
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/20/07
After staying at The Gables on several occasions it has become a favorite of ours. Exemplifying a small unpretentious inn The Gables is a wonderful change of pace in Stowe. Randy and Annette from our first stay were extremely hospitable and quite knowledgeable and willing to share there local insight. The rooms are diverse and each unique with their own charm. The breakfast is delightful as well. And then there's the Hollandaise, which is often executed but rarely perfected and as rich and flavorful as it is The Gables. When were in Stowe we stay at The Gables!

Home Away From Home
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/21/07
The Gables Inn is an inviting Vermont country inn with the most accommodating hosts, Randy and Annette (and Yogi too!). The location is unbeatable and the breakfast is the best in town and the service is always friendly too. Each room has character and many rooms offer fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. I highly recommend the Gables, it will complete your Vermont experience any season of the year!

Go somewhere else

Dirty rooms and poor service. Property is run down and in need of a major renovation. We have stayed at many places in Stowe and this one is the worst.

Warm and Friendly!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/30/05
The inn was very hospitable with Annette and Randy really making us feel welcome. The food was great and they had some good ideas as to what to see and do while we were there. Definitely worth the trip and then return! We will be in October! Our kids loved it there too and want to bring friends next time. I think they liked having Ben and Jerry's so close by! They also loved the breakfasts!

The Gables...go again and again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/12/05
This is a quiet, warm and small inn. Annette and Randy are gracious hosts and Yogi (the inn's canine mascot) is adorable. The breakfast is excellent. You can enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountains with breakfast. I highly recommend them and plan to return this year!
