Weekend getaway
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/2/07
We stayed at the Black Bear Inn for a long weekend. The innkeepers were friendly and helpful. Dinner was great and breakfast was pretty good. The hot tub and firestove were a big plus, as is the proximity to Bolton for skiing. It is a bit of a drive to do anything other than skiing. Our biggest complaint was the bed, which we found very uncomfortable. Overall, good value, but the uncomfortable bed prevented a good night's sleep.

Not what we expected
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/23/06
We were at the Black Bear Inn for our Honeymoon and was kind of diappointed. When first got to our room "The Honeymoon Suite" Coach house. Now I know why they call it a Coach house. It was above a garage. The Hot tub was down a set of stairs outside, and you could see into it. Across the road was residential housing. Not very private. Next to our room was where the Cook and houskeeping stayed. The Inn itself was cozy but not very inviting. Not much to do, If you wanted to go hiking you had to drive to the trails because we did not see any. Our room itself was very clean. Looked like a little apartment. Not very romantic though. The food at the Inn was amazing. Can not complain about that. Then they tack on a 12% surcharge for in house guest for food and drink. Not to mention another 10% tax it may have been a VT tax. I think the room was overpriced also. The Inn Keepers were very pleasant but reserve. Overall, I would not go back. There is not much to do around the Inn, you must travel to get some enjoyment. It's perfect if you are looking to be a recluse there. Good luck!

Very Cute
By Sheryl, 8/21/05
Hello. My husband and I stayed there for one night to meet up with some friends. It was a very cute and clean place to stay. My only suggestion if you are a couple who would like to enjoy a drink or two with friends is to bring your own. The bar at the INN was locked by the time we go back from dinner at Baily's up the street (which stopped serving food at 9:30)and there really is no place "close" to go and get anything. The rooms are very nice and clean. The staff couldn't do enough for you and the food.. was AMAZING!!! Also, just to let everyone know, they charge a 12% fee for food/maid serives. Hope you enjoy you stay as much as we did!!

Definitely going back!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/9/04
My girlfriend and I had a great time at the Black Bear Inn. The area is beautiful, just minutes from downtown Burlington which is an awesome town. The Black Bear Inn was clean and rustic and the food was exceptional. We were even upgraded to a suite for no additional charge (from a room one notch down from a suite). The hot tubs are a nice perk, also clean and seats 2 comfortably. Ken, the Innkeeper, was nice and quite welcoming. We experienced none of the problems described in the other review. Overall it was a great vacation and we are certainly going back sometime!

NEVER going back!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/19/04
My husband & I rented a “deluxe room” for 3 nights. The inn was initially disappointing – kind of generally run down. Our room had a ceiling fan/light, neither worked and hadn’t for a while according to a staff member. Without enough lights the room was dark and the wood on our balcony was literally rotting! Our room was very close to the road, I didn’t think traffic was going to be a problem on a mountain road. WRONG! I was awakened about 6:00 a.m. with traffic! Numerous condos and houses up the road from the inn, so everyone going to work drove past our window! Also huge construction dump trucks were grinding their way up and down the road.

The day after checking in we had a great day 'sight-seeing'! Returning to the inn about 3:30 p.m. we found our room door open as well as door to our balcony open with 2 young men there painting. They were upset for disturbing us and apologized for being there. Ken the inn keeper told them the room was empty.

My husband went with one of the painters to ask what was going on. The worker said “there were people in the room” Ken said "people sleeping in there?" the painter said "no, staying in there"; Ken's reply was "oh, that's not a problem". When my husband asked what was going on, Ken said he had been there all day. My husband explained that wasn't the issue - the door to our room was unlocked and there were strangers in our room without our consent or knowledge - a complete invasion of our privacy. Ken got angry and defensive and approached my husband saying "are you accusing me of being a thief? Let’s go upstairs right now and check it out!” My husband tried to explain our concerns but Ken didn’t want to hear it – he just got angrier and more aggressive! At that point Ken basically told my husband that if we didn’t like the way he ran the inn we could just check out. To avoid any more confrontation he returned to our room, we packed to leave.

Paying for one night’s stay I asked Ken for a receipt – he threw a hand written one to me. To protect ourselves from any question of payment, I asked for it to be marked paid in full. Ken got angry! He said “you’ll get a separate credit card receipt that will match the dollar amount” and that was all he was going to provide; I had to ask him FIVE times to get the receipt marked paid! He kept refusing - telling me the charge receipt amount would match. He finally snatched up a pen scribbled “PD” on the receipt. I asked, “please initial it so there is no question who marked it with “PD”, he refused! I told him I wasn’t leaving until he initialed it! He made a snide remark and initialed it, but he was so angry his face turned red!! It was totally unsettling and a little frightening to be confronted with such anger!

I told him I would tell everyone I knew about the disrespectfulness, rudeness and aggressive behavior we were subjected to! His reply – “go ahead, we’ve been here for 34 years, you don’t matter”!
