Thieves! Wedding gifts and luggage stolen
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/21/11
A friend boooked us a room at this so called 4 star hotel as a wedding present for 2 days, when we left and came back later on that night our room was clean and our luggage and wedding presents were gone! I called the front desk and lady said she would call me back she never did i went downstairs and said she could not do anything because her Director of Operations was not there and they could no handle the "issue' until monday, there was no such thing as customer service the manager was rude and they offered no type of compensation. So its now tuesday and no call from nobody. Please do not stay at that hotel its overpriced and not all its said to be. Im never going to forget this terrible expirience the weekend of my newly wed honey moon.

Not What They Pretend To Be!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/16/11
I decided to give Hotel Derek another chance after a previous horrible experience because I thought that perhaps it was a fluke that my last stay was that bad…and I was wrong! Upon arriving at 4:45 (an hour and 45 minutes after check in) we were told that our Executive Suite was not ready and that it would only take a few minutes. Since it would only take, “a few minutes,” we decided to wait in the lobby and that, “few minutes,” tuned into over an hour. In that hour not a single employee came to check on us or ask us if we needed anything; including the man who was standing behind the front desk who I would later learn was the manager! It was I that made the decision to march up to the counter and ask about our suite and the girl at the desk leaves me standing there for another 10 minutes as she went to find out. Once it was determined that the room was done, she handed me the key and my friend and I had to haul the luggage cart (which was full of stuff because we had a big photo shoot the next day so we had our equipment with us) ourselves along with our dinner guests who were also standing around waiting with us in the lobby. When we finally got to our suite, we were horrified to find that it was not clean at all! The couch was in disarray, there was dirt and filth all over the carpet, and worse, there were pubic hairs in the bathroom closest to the bedroom! Did I mention the handprints on the toilet like somebody threw up and the maids didn’t clean all around? One friend marched down and complained to the manager and I went and told her that it didn’t matter because they had just, “cleaned” and that no matter how many times we complain it simply doesn’t matter. The manager simply shrugged! How is that for customer service?! Also, the bathtub that did not have pubes was not draining and we were literally standing in a pool of water when we showered and the room itself was simply fifthly even if they had, “cleaned” normally, Hotel Derek looks as if they have not maintained their facility! Terrible Hotel, Horrible Service, Absolutely NO Customer Service Skills! The only competent person was the manager of the valets!

Horrible Service
By Wayne T, 4/5/10
Very elegant decor, but very poor service compared to over priced rooms and restaurant. I had my wedding there and was treated less than a regular guest. I will never stay there again.

Be prepared for disappointment
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/31/10
Cute hotel on the surface but same complaints as other reviewers: Valet $20/night (PLUS you have to pay a separate $10 each time you leave if you go somewhere); Valentino restaurant was a disaster (food ok but it was a slow Saturday and we waited on our food almost 1 hour...we got our entrees free, but still paid for drinks, appetizer); they have scented air filters so the a/c vents throughout the entire hotel blows this offensive smell that I'm sure they think smells expensive and it's awful; DON'T order coffee through room service as it will be the most expensive ($16) pot you've ever had (and no better than gas station coffee). Over-rated and WAY over-priced in ALL aspects!

Not for the casual traveler
By No1sRed, 6/1/09
Beautiful hotel but MUCH more oriented to business travelers. Location is difficult for getting in and out of hotel driveway. Be prepared for the $20 per night valet parking fee. King size bed is a standard king, not a California King-my husband is 6'4" tall and his feet hung off the end by a good 4 inches or more. Amenities and linens are very luxe. Rooms are very modern. Smallish bathtub and shower curtain is not held down at the bottom, fought the curtain blowing against me for the entire shower. Lighting is dim and very spread out. Black out shades are wonderful on sunny mornings! The duvet is very heavy and fluffy but easily drags the other coverings off the bed. The cost of the minibar or anything provided in the room is outrageous-only use if able to write it off on an expense account. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous, especially the valet staff. Did not eat at the in-house restaurant - saw the prices on the room service menu and decided against it. I would bet this would be an excellent hotel for the business traveler and their packages look very inviting. It is not for the casual traveler and I do not believe families would do well here.

Excessive Parking Fees Kill the Charm!
By MarkS, 4/14/09
I disliked the $20/overnight parking fee! Nice hotel, but nice enough to justify the parking fee. If you bring a car this is not a good choice! Houston is a very nice city, but NYC parking fees just cannot be justified here.

Not worth it
By Josh, 11/30/08
I stayed at the Derek last year, and went back 2 months ago, this is what I noticed, The restaurant is not french, they kicked off the chef and their menu is very normal, Room Service used to be 24 hours, not anymore, they changed their hygiene products to cheaper ones, staff is not friendly, the concierge made me wait more than an hour for a shuttle I ended up taking a cab, I'm sure I would've been treated better at a motel 6 than here, don't waste your money.

Good for business traveller
By Skepticat, 2/27/08
Comfortable, clean and stylish room,(no heavy wood) in-room safe (great for laptops) in-room internet and wireless access is available in the lobby. Well-stocked mini-bar. Restaurants and drugstore located across the street and location is convenient to business and the Galleria shopping center. However, because of the location, a bit noisy, and with views of traffic. Tricky approach to the hotel (unless you are familiar w/ the traffic patterns) Love the bath products.

Stayed many times, but never again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/13/07
I have stayed here for several years, but the last trip in March, 2007 was really the last trip. The next door neighbors tried to break in - part of an entourage of a rapper in town for a show. Security did nothing, let them get away with it, and I got NO sleep the entire weekend. Obnoxious.
