The Hotel Alex Johnson an Ascend Collection Hotel, Rapid City

This place is GREAT! Very, very comfortable pillow top beds - and I'm a bed snob! Clean room and bathroom. The only complaint would be that the walls are pretty thin - so ask for a room away from anyone if you want quiet! Cute little shops and boutiques in the area as well as coffee places. Just down the block is an outdoor skating rink! What charm! Not too far from the mall - but out of the hustle and bustle. We will definattely stay again! I could only select 2 stars, but would give it a firm 4 stars!!!

I live in Rapid City, South Dakota, and have stayed at the Alex Johnson Hotel a lot. Dont put a bad review about the hotel, but give a bad review about the people that work there. The Alex maybe be old but it is also historical in ways you people dont know. if you read the history on the alex johnson hotel, you will find that it is very very historical. Those of you that are used to staying in a 5 star hotel, should look at the star rating of the hotel before you stay there. You cant exspect everything to be perfect. and by the way i have worked in keystone. and the hotels there are not cheap. I know a lot of you wont llike this comment, but dont hate the hotel, hate the people that work there.

We stayed here for 4 nights starting on 7/25-7/29/10. like one of the other reviews, they reserved the wrong month, and I was charged as well as a no show. They did credit my credit card and I was able to reserve the room for the correct month. Amanda, the front desk clerk was very rude, to the point of glaring looks towards us. I did report her attude towards us, hopefully management got the message. Judith McWalters

I'm now contesting a bill from them, because they reserved my room twice, for the wrong dates, and didn't cancel both reservations. The front office clerk was snotty and the offshore reservation service did not return calls. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DUMP!!

This hotel is nothing like it is advertised. My wife and I spent three nights there this week and very thoroughly disappointed. The hotel is old, everything is old, dirty, or musty. The operation was like being in a Motel 6. Parking is two blocks away on the third parking level, six flights of stairs, no valet or baggage help available. It took three request to get toilet cleaned, room not cleaned one day at all. Rooms are small and bed was hard. Bathroom did not seemed updated for at least thirty years. Promised restaurant was already closed, late July, for the season. Being downtown, we were accosted by street vagrants two of the three evenings. We checked out early. Save your money and stay in Keystone or Hill City. This hotel is a rip off, it is not historic but just old.

Our room was not ready when we arrived at 6pm (should have been ready at 4pm). When we finally were able to check in, our room was filthy, with sticky spots on the nightstand, sticky bathroom floor, and also a dirty tub. We checked out right away, and they charged us for a night, even after I spoke with the manager. The manager then refused to give me the address of the company that owns the hotel. I am disputing the charges with my credit card, and I would NEVER return, nor recommend it to anyone.

The room were dirty bedding stained curtains torn and noise from air condition unts at rear and side of hotel te rooms bore no resemblance to the web site

The only thing I liked about the hotel was the location. The two elevators were out of service at the same time. The winding stair case was difficult to maneuver. Crewel bedspreads should be dry cleaned after every guest leaves, that didn't happen. No operating restaurant. Only one restroom on the ground floor, unisex. For historical value this hotel should be kept and completely renovated before it is allowed to remain open. I gave the service a three because the front desk was cooperative. The location is good and the Lincoln Room is lovely. Catered breakfast was awful.

My spouse and I were celebrating a wedding anniversary and the wonderful downtown location inspired us to stay here. That was the only plus to this hotel...we found dirty towels in the closet and only one washcloth for two guests. We had stayed there before to ring in the new year and had been given a military discount. When we asked for the discount this time, we were told that the room was priced at the lowest they could go...so much for a military-friendly city. Checking in was not the warm and friendly environment you come to expect in small cities. We were already concerned about our stay as we approached the hotel and saw two Rapid City police cars parked in front and the officers were dealing with unruly clientele at Paddy's. Overall, an old slow elevator, insufficient amenities, very poor cooling system and a very uncomfortable bed ensure that we will not stay here again. Which rooms have been renovated? Where is the breakfast that the signs boast about on I-90? The restaurant isn't even open. Historical or just old?

Although this is a charming hotel, the customer service of Mary and Betsy (front desk managers) is an embarrassment to the rest of the Black Hills. We had an issue with the charges on our bill. Upon expressing our concerns to the front desk, not only did they refuse to discuss it, we were met with sarcasm and rudeness. We were absolutely appalled at their rude bahavior. The people in the Black Hills are absolutely wonderful...if you are planning to visit the area, you are in for a treat! I would recommend staying at one of many other customer-oriented establishments in the area...not the Hotel Alex Johnson.
