Horrible
By kristin, 06/10/08
My husband and I went there in October of 06'. Its was bad, I was scarred to walk from my car to the hotel after dark. I think there was a bar or night club(something like that) attached to the building and it was just so loud, the people would leave the club and run up and down the halls. The rooms were nasty, I was scarred the entire time we stayed there. The area it is in is not safe looking at all. We paid like 70 something a night, I didn't expect a 5 star hotel, but I also didn't expect a building that should be condimmed. The people at the front desk acted like they didn't understand whet we were saying to them when we talked to them. The only good thing about the place is that the interstate was right there next to it so we didn't have to venture far into harms way to get to where we wanted to be. I was highly disappointed.

Horrible Staff
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/20/06
The staff was rude, unprofessional and incompitant. We booked a room through Orbitz for the downtown Charleston location, however they accidentally booked us for this H.J. After being on hold for two hours the staff decided that we would not recieve a refund. When we decided that we wanted to stay there for the second night we had booked they wanted us to pay again. When I refused because I had already payed the woman began to yell and call me names. She yelled at me and when I asked her to calm down she hung up on me. When I called back another staff member answered and defended his womans behaviour and then she also began to yell and refused to let us talk to her manager. In the end they kept my $165 dollars and treated us HORRIBLY!!! Never stay here. This place should be shut down and demolished.

run dont walk away from this place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/23/06
I wouldnt even give this place a single star if i didnt have too.The place needs a total make over. Ive read all the reviews up to mine and most say the same thing. It dirty, smells etc.. So i want go on about that. I dont understand some folks giving them 3 and 4 stars when they say it was that bad of a stay. Anyway, I agree with the area looks rough. And it is the closest to down town you can get at the price. Ive stayed at some dumps before but this one is at the top. For them to even use the name Howard Johnson is a shame. I, like everyone else thought it would be niceand it wasnt. I saw some guest changing rooms over and over because something didnt work in the room. They have No internet connection in the rooms or wireless. I called before booking and they said they had connections in the room and they dont. And if i had used the phone line in the room, by unplugging the phone i would have had to pay 35 cents everytime. DO Not Stay Here.

A total nightmare!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/20/05
Very nasty, stinky place. When they supposedly cleaned our room, they didn't put any toilet paper in there, when I went to the fromt desk to ask for it, the lady told me it was too far to walk right then. ( She was on a personal, unimportant call and walked off for a minute and had kleenex in her hand and asked me to use that and she would bring the toilet paper. She never did! Also when they cleaned the room after we slept there there the first night, my child had wet the bed, so I took the sheets off, the cleaning lady put the WET sheets in the chair and made the bed up with no sheets, just the nasty top blanket, which my child covered up with because he gets cold and I had to take hime to his doctor when we got home, he had gotten scabies from the place!!Terrible, Very bad place. Stay away if at all possible. If I had to make a choice between sleeping there again and sleeping in my car in the winter, my car would be the obvious choice. Howard Johnson should be closed down. Also, when I got home and told a friend about the place, she told me she had been to the same one years ago and it was bad then. What a shame.

STAY AWAY!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/08/05
I echo the sentiments of the other reviewers. Filthy rooms and rude staff. Located in a questionable neighborhood.

A nightmare
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/31/05
It was a nightmare. Loud, not very clean, some corridors downright stinky, loud music all the night, next to a railway. The staff was incompetent. They out us in the room where there was another guest already - we came in to find someones' stuff and a TV switched on in the room they've assigned to us! NEVER stay there if can at all be avoided.
