Not what it used to be
I grew up in Myerstown and saw when the Lantern Lodge was originally built by the founder named Kai from Sweden. He aimed to bring cosmopolitan ideas and comforts to this farm community. He has since sold off the motel and restaurant and moved home. The place has gone downhill since then.
The place is really a 1.5 or 2 star place carrying the trimmings of a 3 star location.
When making reservations, I was not asked who was coming, what sized room I wanted, or even smoking or non. I thought this was odd, but I was up for an adventure. I was give a room with two queens--non-smoking.
The rooms are on the dim side and not set up for business travelers. The furniture maybe cherry but the drawers stick. The bathroom was neat and everything worked. However, the walls seem paper thin, and you can here everything going on around you. Don't expect to get decent coffee in the lobby.
The staff is poorly trained. I came back to the room one evening to find the maid's pass keys sitting on my dresser! The wait staff at the restaurant consists of high school kids trying their best to be continental. A funny, sad, and frustrating time. The cloth napkins were very worn. The host one night clearly did not want to sit me and my friends after we abandoned the downstairs lounge becasue of the deafening "entertainment".
The menu was ambitious but poorly executed. The coffee regularly crunchy with grounds and bartenders could not make mixed drinks.
The only good thing about the place is its location for those needing access to Myerstown or quick access to routes 501 and 422.
If you can sleep through the night, eat at the Kum Esse diner, a few steps away, or the 501 Bar and Grill, 3 miles north on 501.
The Lantern Lodge is a pretentious, overpriced Holiday Inn--very sad.
