We just could NOT stay!

We had not made reservations, but chose Quality Inn for the name brand, the reputation. The clerk found it challenging to explain the room charges. First it was one amount, then $10 more. ?? Way off to the side I accidentally saw a printed caveat to debit card payers. ??? We asked for non-smoking and were told that, yes, one was available. Upon entering, we smelled that it was clearly a room that was smoking, and right next to the noisy vending area, so immediately we asked to be switched, requesting that the new room overlook the pool. This next room was not overlooking the pool - it was on the wrong side of the building! Miss Keisha the cleaning lady was fantastic (pretty freckles), as was a maintainance man whose name escapes me (good people, both desreving 5 stars!!) They intervened and were professional, and they helped with the sadly apparent language barrier between myself and Reddy the desk clerk from India, without disrespecting him. We were told that he's a trainee. Did it bother him that he was 0 for 2 in getting us a decent room? Not at all. He was slow as molasses and had to even call elsewhere to find out how to refund my debit card, but this was just icing on the cake, like a 3 Stooges marathon. Upon checking my account at the bank this morning, what do I find? I have been charged the max for our non-stay!! Should have more carefully read the caveat - Will follow our nose more quickly next time!
