Wow, but Whoops!
My wife and I are from Texas and we stayed here Oct 18-23, 2006 as I celebrated my 55th birthday. The first room we checked into was clean and tidy but reaked of cigarette smoke. This was not the fault of the hotel because there are many European people who stay here and have no regard for smoking in a non-smoking room. We called guest services and were immediatley given a new room (#2914).
As you are dropped off at the hotel, you'll enter on 52nd street and greeted by bellmen. In order to get to the lobby, you first take an elevator to the 7th floor. Sometimes this can be congested but it wasn't too bad. The main elevators in the lobby going all the way up to our room on the 29th floor ran fast and frequent. I was impressed.
Forget about the wonderful views you see posted on websites about looking down Broadway onto Times Square. Probably 75% of the rooms in the Novotel DON'T have great views of Times Squares. My room overlooked the ugly Sheraton Hotel across the street, but that wasn't a bog deal for us. We spent most of our time OUTSIDE the hotel ENJOYING Times Square. But please be advised, if you are going there to hang out in your room to stare out the window at Times Square, ASK IN ADVANCE for a A ROOM WITH A VIEW. I was able to open our window and with some contortion, look out of it and snap a picture with my camera of Times Square, but forget about simply staring out the window onto Times Square for hours at a time.
If the Novotel had Bay Windows on the rooms facing Broadway, this Hotel would beat all other New York hotels for the view looking onto Time Square. The location is one of the best for Broadway plays. We saw Phantom of The Opera (my second time) and it was grand. Just a few blocks from the Novotel. Hey, if you are looking for a good laugh, the play "Tina & Toni's Wedding) a few blocks away was an absolute HOOT! This was one of my best adventures in New York! Go see it and have a grand time and a meal too boot. (I danced with the bride ***and I don't like to dance*** and I also danced with two brides maids. Geeze this was a blast.
Our room was very clean and tidy and I was very impressed with the maid service. I tipped here $10 and left gifts of unused subway cards and other things for the maid. Each morning our room was cleaned early and if we returned by lunch, we had a nice clean room.
Hey, how about that hot water? You can't believe how fast you get hot water at the sink and shower! No waiting for 5 minutes for a hot shower. They must have a tankless system that heats the water in the room. We both were very happy about this feature. Plenty of hot water and great water pressure.
The staff was very helpful and friendly and our check in and check out process was smooth and easy.
We NEVER ate at the restuarant in the hotel because there are too many facsinating places in and around the hotel to eat. Our favorite place was the small cafe directly under the hotel at the corner of 52nd and Broadway. The food was very good, the service was grand and the prices were about 70% less than eating at the Novotel.
The low point (and I mean REALLY LOW) in staying at the Novotel is the heating and cooling system. We had to call the maintenance staff 3 times because we were BURNING UP in our room. The whole time we were in the room, it was around 78 degrees. We tried to sleep with the windows open, but there is so much noise from the street (even up to the 29th floor) that it was impossible to sleep with an open window. The A/C system at the hotel runs on boilers and chillers (as I suspect many of the hotels are) and it doesn't allow an individual occupant to cool his/her room and the next door neighbor to heat his/her room.
Lastly, the room was incredibly quiet. The windows are double glazed and when they are shut, you have no idea of the noise outside. Our bed was very comfortable.
