Not Your Typical Whatever, Whenever Experience
By Janine Marie, 1/5/12
What can you say about an uber expensive hotel, in an uber expensive city with rooms smaller than my closet and yet they cannot be bothered to dust? Well, gross is one word that comes to mind. Gross and dirty. Take your money somewhere else because if you dare say anything negative about the "whatever, whenever" experience, they will question if you really stayed there. And don't bother trying to clean up for them because they will actually charge you for touching the mini-bar (when all you were trying to do was get the 1/2 inch thick dust sheet off the area). And do not bother to ask for assistance - ever, because they do not give it. They do not have enough staff to assist at the front desk. The lines were insane (and they do not have the standard SPG preferred guest line). The concierge virtually ignored people waiting for assistance... what hotel in NYC does not have the appropriate number of staff during the holidays. Don't think that you will get the adequate number of towels (even if you ask). Don't think that your keys will work. Don't try to link reservations with points and cash (that just confuses everything). I have stayed in several "W's" and I have stayed in other NYC hotels... this is not acceptable. Heck, I have stayed in better Best Westerns in the middle of nowhere that could show this place a thing or two. This hotel is horrible. Small dirty rooms. Rude staff. Horrible service. I will not be going back again, location be damned. You are better off in Times Square.

An impressive member of the W Hotels
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/18/10
I'm a pretty loyal SPG hotel traveler and have stayed at 5 different W hotels. This was by far one of my better experiences. I actually lucked into getting this room through priceline at a rate of $135/night pre-tax. I'm pretty sure I had the smallest room in the hotel- but it was impeccably desgined and perfect for this single, 32 year old professional's 3-day Memorial Day Weekend getaway for shopping, theater and site-seeing. I find some of the W hotels to be a bit over-the-top- but this was just right. The location was perfect as I found myself able to walk to most places I needed to go and for further treks the subway is very convenient. Coming from the midwest, I can see how some might have found service to be slightly snooty- but I just kill people with kindness and seemed to have no problems. I would stay here again- but never like to spend more than $200 a night on a even the nicest hotel. Fortunately- there are other acceptable SPG hotels in Manhatten to choose from. If I had paid $350-$400 a night perhaps I would have been expecting more.

Motel-like room and service at hotel prices...
By JessicaC, 8/14/09
Truly awful. I stayed at the W New York recently and was originally going to be there for 5 nights, but ended up moving elsewhere because the room was so bad. There was so little lighting within the rooms that it was really kind of creepy. They brought in an extra lamp for me, but it made no difference. The rooms were also quite small and I was left wondering if they actually do any cleaning as well. The only thing nice about the hotel is what they call the living room in the reception area downstairs, but if you actually care about comfort within the rooms, do not stay there. I ended up at a Hilton at about the same rate. Hilton's not the best, but at least it's consistent.

Terrible stay
By GG, 7/13/09
I had high expectations of the W Hotels from reviews and its reputation. Unfortunately, it was disappointing and way overrated. The staff could use a lesson in customer service and politeness. I wasted about an hour of my vacation waiting for staff to fix things that should have been noticed before handing a room over to a guest. Things too gross to type. Not only did I waste my time, but felt that it was no big deal to them. I would have felt better if they even offered an apology or asked how my stay was. No courteousness whatsoever. If you like feeling like you're in the dark, you'll enjoy the stay here in both the decor and the staff's personality.

Will stay here again!
By Wendy, 6/12/09
I had no complaints whatsoever. My husband and I stayed here with our 5 month old baby and it was a dream. We booked the smallest room through hotwire.com and they upgraded us at no charge to a larger room when we got there. My baby's pack'n'play fit cozily in between the bed and the airconditioner which provided a lovely white noise for her to sleep by. Each nook and cranny was decorated so stylish and no detail left unnoticed. The staff was way more friendly than I expected and they had this great thing called the "acura service". They really make a small space special. Dining tip: check out Cafe Metro for a good and cheap breakfast just one block east or west of the hotel.

Great Stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/14/08
The W New York underwent renovation in August 2008 and I think it really showed during my stay there. The whole hotel had a very fresh, clean look and a pleasant smell everywhere inside. The rooms were modern, well-appointed, and more than adequately sized. The staff was genuinely helpful at all times and took great care and pride in providing a great level of service for their guests. For those wary of this property, I would say that under their new direction the old disappointments no longer exist and its time to give this hotel a second chance. I know where I'll be staying next time I'm in New York.

Overall very friendly staff, well decorated hotel, perfect location. I had an upgraded room and still a bit small for the price. (500/night when i was there).

The Best Part of My New York Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/24/08
The room was well appointed, the bathroom a wee bit small. We were really scheptical about the size of the room we would be given but were pleasantly surprised. The Whiskey Bar seemed a hopping place to be , and also the lounge but due to the short stay we had we never checked these out. We would stay here again if we ever came back to New York City. At this point I should add that we found the residents of this city on the whole quite cold, rude and pretentious.

Filthy, smelly, dusty horrible place - don't stay there
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/11/08
My main problem with W Lexington Ave is that I could not get full rest and I could not sleep well in their rooms for a number of reasons. First, the wall which is erected in the rooms makes the room feel even smaller and, most importantly blocks any energy which enters the room from the window. The bar with lights is hanging at the face level just above your head when you are in bed. That unconsciously makes me feel anxious and unsafe. Such build-up of the rooms is against basic rules of feng shui, and makes the room unhealthy. Second, the air-conditioning system is the hotel is by far too noisy. Even, when I switch it off, I can still here lots of noises and it often wakes me up. Finally, the hotel does not feel clean. In fact, it is smelly and filthy. In the room, the mini-bar trays are covered with dust. The lighting is done in a "clever" way, that you cannot have full light in the room (which is also a problem for me as I like it bright light when I am not sleeping). So I always think that I'd better not walk without shoes on that dirty carpet. The hotel also uses a lot of smelly substances (probably some sticks) with a very strong smell which disturbs me as I like clean air. It feels like if the hotel managers are trying to hide the unpleasant smells with artificial odours. In fact, this time when I arrived to the hotel and felt a bit dizzy after the car trip, this smell made me feel worse and I felt sick just when I entered the hotel. Additionally, I think that the showers are awful. The shower head is not flexible, so the water runs all over the shower room, which I have to dry with clean towels. I think it is a shame - because everyone is trying to be so green - saving water, recycling, reusing towels several times. But not in this hotel! I also had an incident when some other guests were given a key to my room and they entered my room in the middle of the night waking me up and scaring me to death! I was planning to stay in the hotel for 4 nights, but after third sleepless night (there was some really loud noise about which I complained) I decided to move to another hotel. In addition, the hotel foyer is full of working girls, and when I had a cup of tea downstairs, I was mistakenly taken for one of them, which is, of course, very flattering, but not entirely pleasant. If it was not a business trip, and I was not that so busy I would certainly demand a compensation for all the discomfort that I did experience with W Lex Ave. As far as my future travel concerned, this hotel is a definite "NO!" for me. I would not recommend it to anyone.
