An ideal hotel for a late night EWR arrival
The distance of this hotel from all EWR terminals is about the length of a football field. If it wasn't for the barriers that run the perimeters of the short term parking lots, you could very easily walk to this hotel from the airport, which makes it a bit ironic that the evening of my arrival I waited almost 25 minutes for the hotel courtesy shuttle while looking at the hotel and thinking that I could have walked there in about 3 minutes if not for that barriers. Still, having arrived at almost 1am with a 9am appointment in Manhattan the next day, it was great to be able to just go to my hotel, check in, and be done with it for the evening.
The entire staff--front desk, room service, housekeeping, shuttle drivers, etc.--was extraordinarily friendly and helpful. My room was very clean and well appointed, if a tad small ( typical in the NYC metropolitan area, so you can't really hold that against this particular hotel as you will find pretty much the same at any hotel within 30 minutes of Manhattan). One minor issue I had with the room setup is the bathroom. It faces a full length mirror, so unless you have the body of a supermodel, you have to close the door in order to avoid being forced to stair at a somewhat awkward reflection. Wi-fi internet is $12.95 for 24 hours usage, which I think is outrageous, particularly since a less expensive or free wired option was not available as an alternative. Those satisfied with accessing the internet via a smart phone or tablet through their mobile service will likely find this a non-issue, though.
My only real complaint with this hotel is the same one that I have with almost all Marriotts--that you practically have to take out a second mortgage on your home in order to be able to afford to eat on the premises. One evening, after arriving late--and starved--to my room, I paid a room service fee of $50 for a 12" cheese pizza and a half bottle of wine. Food costs, compounded by the fact that there are no less expensive alternatives nearby, can be an issue if you intend to spend all or the majority of your time at the hotel. However, if you're only planning to sleep there at night and visit Manhattan during the day, you will find plenty of affordable alternatives and won't even have to consider this dilemma.
One key convenience that I did enjoy was that I was able to use the hotel's courtesy shuttle to go to the airport and, from there, take the airtrain into Manhattan (Penn Station). It costs $25 round trip and takes about 30 minutes, which is the primary reason that I rated this location a 3 rather than 4. But if you're only staying for a short time and prefer a hotel away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan--or just don't want to have to take out a small loan to pay for a hotel while in the NYC area--it's kind of ideal, definitely user friendly. One concern that I had in deciding whether or not to book here was the noise from the airport. I feared I would hear planes coming and going at all hours. But I heard nothing and I had a room facing the airport. If this is what you fear, it's not a problem. All in all, I thought it was a great hotel. It definitely met my needs for the three nights I was there.
One word of advice if, like me, you're an avid debit card user: Upon check-in, the hotel will debit the entire cost of your stay plus $30 per night for incidentals. I'm used to this. So not only did it not bother me, but I anticipated it. However, for those who are not accustomed to being assessed the full amount of their stay up front, take note.
