Good location, cheap rooms but dank and dirty.
By ,
I have been to Vegas many times and lived there briefly about 5 years ago. I used to stay on the strip but the gambling gets expensive and the crowds too much. I met an old buddy this time and we wanted a spot where we could gamble and get drunk without worrying about driving or hassling with taxis, so Downtown Vegas was it and we chose El Cortez. Valet was quick and friendly, the check in went well (Thurs) and desk clerk was courteous ($50 on credit card for incidentals); check-out was easy over the tv's video check out. The room overall was spacious, sink vanity area very small, no iron/board. The bed was made and toilet paper folded in a point, otherwise the non-smoking rooms smelled dank and heavily of cigar smoke; my clothes wreaked of it wherever I went. The clothes I didn't wear still had to be washed when I got back home because of the stink. The table tops and end tables had drips of various fluids and had obviously not been wiped down in a long time. I would have given 2 more stars if not for the stink and dried fluids. Spent a good amount of time gambling in the casino (bj, bacarrat) during the day and late into the night, twice until the sun came up. For every one courteous/fun dealer, there are 5 rude ones who have no qualms about showing just how much they hate their jobs. Waitresses aren't much to look at but the drinks came around relatively quickly and they were polite and thankful for the tips. El Cortez is in a good spot but you definitely get what you pay for here. Golden Nugget is a better hotel but over the last few years has become too overpriced. Too bad!

I've stayed at better places
By ,
They had nice size rooms, small bathroom, when we wanted to take a shower in the morning there would not be any cold water, and the hot was to hot to take a shower. As for the slot Machines , we thought they were very tight. The majority of their machines are video poker which I don't care for.... As for the Hotel Cafe we lost are appetite after we seen Cockroaches crawling on the booth next to us....When we talk to the Manager at first he acted like he did not believe us. Then he said he would take care of it...Weather they did or not we don't know.....We did not eat there anymore after seeing that

Nice if you brush it off
By ,
El Cortez is great for the rates, location and rooms. Just sleep, shower and go elsewhere to enjoy Vegas. Take the Deuce to the upper strip tor walk 5 minutes to downtown. Every time I have hung out at the El Cortez other then just to crash it has been pretty bunk. It's either getting called on in public by the bartender for using their free coupons, weird staff at the coffee shop (free coupons here too) or listening to the middle aged problems of the driver who drives the shuttle to the airport (Yep, it's free), or the Casino (people take the cheap rooms and go elsewhere to eat and gamble, go figure).

unfair treatment
By ,
I went to eat at coffee shop, el cortez has a policy they will only sit single people at tables in front. The problem is they seat two people at same tables. So if the place is half full and your single you can't get a table. Last time I went there I had to wait over twenty min for a table. there were atleast ten tables free. I comlained then and when I got home I wrote them a letter. I got no response. So I guess it is the policy to treat single people unfairly.

best hotel away from the strip
By ,
When my husband and i stayed at El Cortez for our 16th anniversary (and to get re-married by Elvis), we had a fabulous time. The hotel was quaint and we got one perk after another. Slots were loose. We received a free dinner from the hotel to celebrate our anniversary. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who would like to see Vegas and spend money gambling, not pay for someone's electric bill.

Great Cheapo Vegas
By ,
I stayed here last May, and upon checkin, received a voucher for another two night stay free. It was only good for the summer, and I couldn't use it, but a good value and offer if you can get back to Vegas for a quick weekend. I enjoyed my tower room. Not huge, but nice comfy beds with an additional seating area. Small bathrooms. Casino is great. Lots of old Vegas feel with a full pay 3:2 single deck BJ for $5 (sometimes even $3). Friendly dealers. Easy walk to the rest of downtown. You have to be willing to give up all the fluffy frills to stay here, but if all you want to do is sleep, drink, and gamble, this is the place!!

Bang for the Buck Good Comps loose Penny slots
By ,
Two years ago I needed a place to stay on a Family Trip & normally stay at the Four Queens I booked late, my only option was the El Cortez. I need to say this I had stayed at the 4Q since 1998, my biggest comp was buy one night get one free. One stay at the Cortez & I have never paid for a room since in 5 stays my typical comp is 2 or 3 nights free, slot cash & food comps plus they give you a newsletter with additional coupons just sign up for players club. The rooms are spacious, comfy, clean but not fancy or elegant furniture is big & made of wood somewhat Vintage but not old as in worn out. The hotel has been remodeled replacing the Casino Carpet, adding newer slots, a 24/7 restraunt that has a great late night early morning breakfast for under $4, food is good portions large prices small. My rooms have always been clean with crisp sheets, some rooms have flat screen tv's, new Cabana Suites just opened I haven't stayed in one yet. I have stayed in the Vintage rooms very art deco orginal hotel rooms from when Bugsy Malone owned the place, the Pavillion rooms are outside above the parking garage not my favorite but not bad either. My favorite rooms are in the Tower very spacious the bathrooms are small but the rooms have a king or two queen, with a sitting area with great views of the mountains or the strip above floor 7 is best, if you have a wheelchair bound friend or relative they have wider doors for ease of access just ask, rooms are cheap, great package deals online for the Cortez that is how I ended up staying the first time. Casino floor is clean spacious not cramped or crowed in by machines, the penny, 2 cent, and nickel slots can be very loose and offer extended play even if you don't hit a jackpot. The quarter machines can be generous on my first stay I won $200 on a quarter machine playing one quarter on a single line bet, they offer jackpot bonus gifts mine was a $10 gift card to Walgreens & have lots of different freebies, last trip I won $300 on a 2cent machine. The staff is friendly & nice, depending how busy it is the drink waitresses come more or less often as they staff according to how busy it is, of course tipping the waitress, well gets you a faster return visit remember waitresses only get paid tips no hour wages at all in most Las Vegas Casinos especially those downtown this knowledge was emparted to me a few years back when I ran into a waitress who was a highschool mate she gave me the 411 all they get is a uniform if any & free dry cleaning so tip well and you will get better speedier service. I once watched a poker table at the El Cortez go all night I went to dinner and 4 gentelmen were wooping it up at this table when I came back from dinner & some gambling down on Freemont which is just blocks away they were still there I went up to room to clear my head of noise took a nap, came back down at 2am these guys were still there, when I went to breakfast dang it they were still there with a new dealer. I don't play much poker but that must have been one hot table. The crowd is usually 30-Senior which makes for a safe comfy gambling expereince lots of security both inside & out, lots of recent construction in & around the hotel has finished adding to the foot traffic the bus line that goes to the strip is a block away as is a movie theatre. My faves for gambling on the downtown strip are Four Queens, Golden Nugget, Golden Gate, and of course the El Cortez. I reccomend this hotel to adults wanting a nice decent place to lay their heads you won't find a better more welcoming bargain. I spend very little time in my room so its practical & gives me more money to play. I like the Freemont Experience shows nice free distraction get the American Casino guide on Amazon great freebies, slot cash and show discounts for the Golden Nugget I make it a point to see a show there every visit very affordable and professionally produced.

Good bargain
By ,
I liked the single deck blackjack but some locals were pushy about having me do the game-slowing sidebet. Room was large and clean. Comps were pretty generous. Food in cafe was very tasty. Dealers not good at English. Great valet with free parking. I felt safe at the location, a short walk from the Fremont Street Experience and other casinos. I may stay at El Cortez again
