A Terrific Hotel

We came to St.Louis for the 50th anniversary reunion of my high school class. Used Priceline.com to bid on a "4 or 5 star hotel in downtown," and wound up with the Marriott Union Station Hotel. Checking on past customers' reviews, I got a mixed picture, and I really wasn't sure what to expect. It turned out to be a very pleasant experience. Like every Marriott I have ever stayed at it is well run. Service staff were extremely friendly and outgoing. The place was clean. The downtown location is fairly convenient to the touristy side of St.Louis (Busch stadium, etc.), and the ambience is unique. Built into the old Union Station, which stopped handling trains about 30 years ago, the hotel is part of a complex that includes a large shopping arcade that used to be the central concourse for train travelers. (See my comment below) The hotel actually starts on the third floor of the edifice. The reception lobby area was the original one for Union station. Lots of marble, stained glass, heavy carved furniture, ornate cornices, etc. Beautiful. Excellent staff, and a superb breakfast buffet that my wife and I enjoyed greatly. Our room was nicely appointed and very clean. Sad side: most of the shops in the attached mall (the old railroad passenger concourse) had closed, and one could see the impact of the recession clearly. A number of touristy shops and food places remain open. To be sure, parking is pricey. We paid $20 per day for valet parking. We would happily stay there again. I suspect some of the negative comments I saw were from the period before Marriott took over.
