Great Spot for a Romantic Get Away!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/30/10
My boyfriend and I spent the night at the St. James for our one year anniversary. I love historic places and this was the first historic hotel we had ever stayed in. It was exactly what we expected and had such a wonderful ambiance to it. It was great to arrive and get Starbucks in their coffee shop, as well as have a few choices for dinner. We decided to eat at one of their restaurants "The Port" to celebrate. We had a whirlpool suite and loved the bath salts they included as well as their choice of shampoo and conditioner. Usually nothing to write home about, just shampoo right? The brand they used was great. The bed was very comfortable and our room was spotless, we took many pictures of the room as well as their historic lobby. The location was wonderful as you are able to walk to everything. It is a little pricy, however, if you want to treat yourself, it is worth it! As far as someone saying they thought it was a B&B, the hotel's website nor guidebooks ever gave that impression. The only complaint I would have is in our room you could hear the pipes every now and then. I would definitely stay there again and hopefully enjoy services from the spa they have!

Another nice weekend at the St.James
By Thomas, 11/7/06
Last weekend we spent our anniversary at the St.James like we have been doing for the past 10 years. And once again we had a wonderful time. Some of the previous reviews mention a musty smell. Have never noticed that. The staff has always been very accomodating. Our rooms have always been clean. Each room is unique, so it's nice to get a different room each time you go. Each room is named after a boat that at one time cruised the Mississippi River. There's a picture of the boat in every room, with a brief history. We usually get a room with a view of the river and train depot. We enjoy hearing the trains go by at night. It's part of the St.James experience. Jimmy's Pub is on the 5th floor. Nice place to go and chat. Warm atmosphere. Nice woodwork, leather sofas and chairs. Have ordered their room service and have never been disappointed. They have 2 restaurants and a small coffee shop to choose from. Granted the TV's are older, but I guess that's not one of our concerns. The St.James is in a great location in downtown Red Wing. You're in walking distance to the beautiful Sheldon Theater, unique shops and restaurants. So if you're into history, antiques and trains, give The St.James Hotel a try.

Quaint and warm
By Bill H, 7/5/06
It depends on what your needs are...For a weekend getaway in a historical building with a warm help staff it was perfect. Not for those needing computer hookups, state of the art communications etc. Nicely done rooms, handmade quilts instead of bedspreads, nice touch. Comfortable. Restaurant was average, although service was quite nice and attentive. Great romantic getaway place in a very nice town. Recommended. Not a family type place, though, best for couples or those on business who prefer a homey atmosphere. There are conference rooms available as well as a nice looking pub upstairs.

Anniversary weekend
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/26/06
Our reserved room was not available for nearly an hour and a half after check in time. We were requested to hang out at "Jimmys Bar" in the hotel while the room was being completed. The waitress did not come around so after about a half hour had to order drinks at the bar and return to our table. The room had a nice view of the garbage dumpsters. We later dined at Ports Restaurant which is located in the wine cellar of the hotel. They did have good food and service but it was really chilly in there and kind of ruined the experience for my wife. I guess the overall experience was OK but not worth the money. Oh, and the toilet ran on and off all night even after fiddling with it a couple of times.

Dont GO!
By Local, 6/3/06
The Staff was never around and I just needed directions to get to my destination... MY ROOM! When I did finally find the front desk staff, they were young students with the "I dunno attitude!" So, I finally managed to get to my room after a half an hour. My wife was worried where I was. (parking the car.) The floorplan is too complicated, and no signs did not help! The room was outdated and just did not do it for us. They update and put a CD player in the room, but I did not bring any of my cd's if I would have known. Not very informative upon resrvation booking! I will not return! Nichols Inn, Red Wing here I come!

B & B it is not
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/15/06
I was looking for a Bed & Breakfast in Red Wing and found the St. James as a B&B. It was far from it! That was our 1st dissapointment. I felt mislead! The staff was very snooty and I dispised the check in and out due to the stuffiness in the room as I had to interact with staff that were unhappy with the disruption to there gossip of other staff members. Or the concierge was never at the concierge desk to ask a simple question! She was at the front desk helping the understaffed areas! No hours of opperation posted at the concierge desk as well! That is why we stay at B & B's!!!

Just OK for too much money
By Aaron, 5/3/06
We spent two nights at the St James in April 2006. For what amounted to a pretty average hotel room, it seemed we paid a premium price. The service was attentive and throughtful. The hallway leading to our room smelled of fresh paint and body odor. We were awakened multiple times throughout the night by trains right outside our window. No continental breakfast was provided, only coffee and tea. TV in the room was very small and the remote control barely functioned. We had dinner one night in the Port restaurant. Again, our service was decent, but I can't say the same about the food. I had the Filet and my wife had the Salmon. Mine was almost tolerable and hers was downright indeible. I would say definitely avoid the Port. If you are thinking about spending time in Red Wing, find a hotel with better rates and spend your money somewhere other than the St James.

Fantastic place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/9/05
A very nice hotel right with a fantastic history located right in the center of Red Wing. From its central location all of the great tourist attractions are within a reasonable walking distance, At the hotel the staff are all very friendly, happy, and helpful. The room was very clean, quiet, and nicely done, with a reasonable size.

Outstanding!
By Mike, 7/22/05
We spent two nights during a heatwave. The wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay! There was none of the musty smell reported by others and the rooms had sufficient air conditioning to be very comfortable. The English Pub, Jimmy's, was excellent, with a wide range of drinks, wines, and beers available - their ice cream drinks were superb! The live entertainment played a selection of oldies that made for a very relaxing atmosphere. We plan on returning to the St. James whenever we visit Red Wing!
