Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island

We have made a family tradition to go to Mackinac Island every summer after we moved here in 2004. We have stayed in different hotels from year to year and stayed from St. Ignace, Mackinaw city and in the island. We like the Grand hotel the most and this is our 2nd year staying there. Our children have lots of activities to do and love dressing up at night time and go dancing. I highly recommend the inroom dining. No lines and no worries .The children can eat whenever they want and finish whenever the want at the comfort of your own room.There's plenty of leftovers for snacks. Request a room with a balcony to have a great ambience for your inroom dining experience. Sign up and take advantage on their Specials. We got a good deal of $99.00 per person including breakfast and dinner. When we got there, we got a room with a balcony overlooking the golf course. What a deal! Of course kids activities are free. We can't wait to do it again next year. It gets better and better every year,.

Way overpriced, $780 per night for tiny "lake view" room. Dirty finger prints on walls and doors, dirty comforter and captets. Bed was very old and uncomfortable. Terrible cafeteria style food. $100 extra per night to keep bicycles in room. Front desk staff extremely rude. Grounds are nice but don't pay the $10 to come on the property if you're not a "guest" Would have left early but there was a $350 early check out charge!

This hotel definitely caters to the 'recession proof' I stayed at the Grand for 2 nights along with my fiance, and needless to say it was the best resort experience we've ever had. Upon arriving to the ferry in Mackinaw City, our bags were tagged and taken directly to the hotel-never had to lift a finger! The staff was very kind and helpful, and service was impeccable throughout the whole trip. The decor is unique: looking at the colors and furniture you'd think "how in the heck does this all go together?" But somehow everything matches and every single inch of the Grand is well.. Grand. Our room was smaller (we didn't need anything big for the 2 of us) and was very tastefully decorated. We had views of the golf course and of Lake Huron. It was relaxing to fall asleep to the sound of the horses coming up the hill. Everything was immaculately clean when we arrived, and we were treated extremely well. We had drinks at the Cupola bar and the bartender was very charming; we went for a romantic walk along the bluffs near the hotel after and watched the sun go down over the water. Absolutely stunning. Every place we dined was an experience, and I have no bad things to say about service or quality of food and drinks. We also relaxed at the pool for an afternoon, the water was so warm! My fiance also said the golf is worth the price- getting to play 9 right near the lake was quite the experience for him. He said the groups in front of him were a little slow but he didn't mind, the style and challenge of the course had made up for it. Overall, I would highly recommend Grand Hotel to anyone looking to vacation at a breathtaking hotel with old school charm. I definitely encourage younger couples (such as ourselves) to take the the trip up, you definitely will not regret it! Food, service, room, and atmosphere are top notch, and I look forward to our next trip to the Grand.

I don't write many reviews but considering the terrible experience my family had at this establishment, I felt it necessary. We booked 3 rooms including a suite for a long weekend. My wife, 2year old son and I checked into a 2 double bed room and were appalled at the filth. My 2 year old found a USED CONDOM under the bed skirt. We then discovered dirty socks under the other bed, empty liquor bottles in the ice bucket, and empty wine bottles in the closet. My wife called down to speak with a manager but no one returned our call. In the mean time I paid a maid cash to clean our room for piece of mind. In the morning we tracked down a manager to report this. He never offered to change our room or refund us for the night but simply left it at "I'm sorry." The other rooms had problems too, the suite had 2 bathrooms and in the morning both sinks would be covered with insects. The staff is very poorly trained. For example I attempted to arrange for our bags to be delivered to the ferry for our departure, which is customary.. I was initially told that a 2hour pickup call was required and to put the bags in the hall. I set my alarm for 5:45am to facilitate this but I learned after making the pickup call that the bag staff doesn't arrive until 7am. "Not to worry" the front desk clerk says because when you call back at 7am they will still be able to accommodate. I called back at 7am to learn that no the bag staff cannot assist with this and that I will have to take our 6 bags with us. No easy task I can assure you considering we are traveling with a small child. I confronted the front desk about the miss information that I had been provided with but again all that was uttered was "I'm Sorry." I travel the world for work and have stayed in thousands of hotels over the years but I never really could say for certain where my worst hotel experience was until now. This place will forever rank at the bottom. It's a really mystery how and establishment can hold themselves out as a 4 or 5 star but be so incompetent.

Raised in Michigan I had been to the island numerous times but never had the presence of mind to make a reservation early enough to be able to stay there. Finally on a trip back for a wedding a friend and I decided to take a couple days and stay there. Simply put, it was a wonderful time. It's not a perfect venue for everyone, but for those that want to take a walk back in time to a simpler place where charm is the ambience. We were there in Sept. We enjoyed the staff, the food was very good, and the room was comfortable. If walking is a problem for you or anyone in your party you'll want to think ahead. A walk from one end of the hotel to the other is a quarter of a mile...in most places this would be a cab ride. If I had a wish for the Grand, I'd love to be able to stay there during the period of preparation for winter shutdown. I was talking with one of the staff and he was relating to me the proceedure. I found it facinating what's involved in the process. It wouldn't be a touristy experience but would surely be interesting.

One of the most peaceful and loveliest places I have ever stayed. It was definitely worth the money, but remember, you usually always get what you pay for. The food was excellent, the service was impeccable. It is not a fast -paced place to stay but rather a quiet and elegant old hotel which may be more enjoyed by the older, and/or more mature set. Definitely a place to be gently savored like a fine wine. My heart longs to return, but next time I will stay longer.

I did not enjoy the Grand Hotel. I felt that the rooms were taky and the colors were distracting. Many of the rooms were very small and very expensive and most of them(unless you paid extra) had an amazing view of the roof! The food was very expensive for a somewhat small portion and the matresses felt like they were as old as the hotel itself! It seemed to me that the only reason they were allowed to call it a 5 star hotel was because of the dress code required after 6 pm. My advice would be if you have enough money to stay there...DON'T! Take your money and stay at one of the many other Inns on the island, it will save you money and you will be much more comfortable!

The Grand Hotel on Makcinac Island is a staple for any Michiganian. Everyone grew up with the Grand in their memories but not all are lucky enough to stay under her roof for a vacation. If you truly have an appreciation for the grandeur of yesteryear you will love the Grand. Those wanting a modern, snappy hotel wiith a pace to match our 2009 schedules should not try a visit here. History prevails at the Grand Hotel. The service is old school - attentive and with expectations. You dress throughout the hotel after 6 pm - a lovely touch. High tea in the lobby at 2 pm - elegant and well done. Pull up one of the 100 rocking chairs on the beautiful ffront porch and read, rest or cocktail. The view is incredible. Tour the hotel - all floors - and enjoy the history. Croquet or bocci on the front lawn, swim and spa - it is all here. We love the Grand for many reasons. Those with an appreciation of old elegance will do the same.

The Grand Hotel is absolutely stunning! It is a beautiful place overlooking the water. The pool area is great and the golf course is also nice. I would just be sure to bring lots of fancy clothes because they are very strict about what you wear. The rooms are all different and is really luck of the draw on what room you get. We came for a conference and some people absolutely loved their rooms while most weren't as happy. The main dining room has an amazing buffet breakfast and a really good kids buffet for supper but the lunch buffet is not worth the money. Overall the Grand Hotel is very elegant and worth the stay!

It's a wonderful hotel with fantastic views. I've been coming there for years and I'm still impressed with the hotel. They have a lot to offer like cycling, golf, tennis, swimming, horseback riding, and more. They have great restaurants, cafes, and bars.
