Do your homework.
If you want the flavor of an old historic hotel, stay at the Hawthorne. But, if you want amenities, privacy/silence, insulated rooms...stay elsewhere. The bathrooms were small, cold (drafty), and ran out of hot water. The TV's were from the 90's, thank goodness for my laptop.
The main lobby is beautiful. From the wonderful artwork on the wall, to the 2 front desk clerks (whom where very easy on the eyes), this hotel welcomes you as if you are the King. The Tavern is nice, with a beautiful fireplace, and a large flat screen TV.
Be careful not to loose your bank at Nathaniel's. The dining experience was scrumptious, but left my wallet empty.
Salem Beer Works is fabulous. TV’s everywhere, gorgeous women everywhere, a very satisfying menu, and the best beer north of Boston. Not to mention, the prices are reasonable.
Other hot spots were, Victoria’s Station and The Old Spot.
