Wow what a great place!
By Rowdy, 8/30/12
The Staff is top notch, and very eager to help in anyway possible. Will tell you the places to grab good food at reasonable prices. They are also all to happy to point you in the right direction and tell you anything you need to know to get around the town. The Hotel is located in a great area, with great atmosphere. It has its faults, but come on the place is very old. They are working on it all the time and trying to do justice to the old building. Very comfortable place to stay. Affordable! Clean! Quite! And just in general a nice little Gem in just the right location for everything. I will be back!!!

The staff was so helpful and made you feel at home
By Mary Ann, 5/22/11
The location is great. It is easy to walk just about any where in the French Quarter. It is a nice quiet part of the French Quarter. It was so relaxing, sitting on the balcony overlooking Ursulines St. The best part was the staff who were very helpful and informative. The staff always had a very pleasant and positive attitude. It was evident that they wanted you to have a good time in New Orleans.

Charming hotel and unbeatable service
By Carmen, 4/26/11
Great location, charming hotel and unbeatable service. Me and my sister just visited NOLA for the first time and fell in love with the city. Big part of it was thank you to the exceptional service we got at this hotel, when we first got there, there were some issues with our reservation, but April was extremely helpful and squared everything away. Her and her brother went above and beyond to make sure we got the best out of our stayed, anything we asked for was given to us. Definitely will make this the 'place to stay' whenever we go back to the city, more than likely next year and will recommend the hotel to everybody who is planning to visit.

Disgusting Room that made us physically ill!!!
By Jessica Cook Mims, 4/18/11
I was really looking forward to staying at this hotel. All the correspondence I had with the owners leading up to my stay had been very pleasant and they were very accomodating. Once our party arrived, though, everything fell apart. We had two rooms for 3 days. One room had blood all over the comforter. This room stayed moist / damp feeling the entire weekend and everyone staying in it came home sick with chest colds. The second room had a horrible smell like sulfur for 2 out of 3 days and the sink, toilet, and shower were stopped up. We were not comped for our rooms and were not moved as they were at capacity. the rooms were not cleaned while we were there and didn't seem cleaned before we arrived. I would never want anyone to stay here!

coffee and beignets on the balcony
By beachmayes, 4/19/09
Its obviously an old building. There was a huge crack in the room running from floor to ceiling, the toilet was scary loud when flushed and the pillow shams smelled musty but were laid on top of the pillows, not actually on the pillows. free parking was several blocks away. If this bothers you, don't stay here. Despite all of this..we loved it. Our balcony overlooked a bakery and it was quiet enough to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning. Close enough to the fun, but far enough to have undisturbed sleep. We would definitely stay again

Great time
By Kim, 10/9/07
I loved my time in New Orleans at the Villa Convento. It was a neat older hotel, different from what I usually stay in. While I do agree with some things I've read in previous reviews (the courtyard definitely needs attention, the carpets could stand a cleaning), overall it was a great experience. We had two different rooms, one was on the third floor and had a spiral staircase you had to climb to the loft up above with three more beds. The place had a lot of character. Very friendly staff who were real helpful in suggesting restaurants, etc. I thought it would be more fun to stay in a hotel that had a real New Orleans feel rather than a boring Westin or Sheraton. I was right. Very convenient to Bourbon Street, we walked there each night and back. Safe neighborhood. Great bakery across the street for breakfast or lunch. I'd stay here again.

some people look for problems
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/31/07
i have stayed at the hotel villa convento (and across the street at the french quarter gues house when they managed it) for 15 years....probably a dozen times. i have never had a bad stay here. the campos family are, to a person, absolutely terrific, genuinely nice and helpful. the prices are perhaps the lowest in the quarter. my last stay was in room 102, i believe...right inside the front door. the room was large, nicely decorated and immaculaely clean. so what if the public spaces are not at the quality of a five star hotel? some people bring their white gloves along looking for trouble and, not unexpectedly, they find it! don't be put off by these one and two star reviews. give the hotel villa convento a try. oh, and if you encounter problems, you will probably get a better response if you are nice than if you are nasty...a truism about life in general. the good times won't roll even in new orleans if you are an uptight lout.

Shabby Chic
By andrean, 11/5/06
I have stayed at the Villa Convento for over 20 years, but this was my first trip after Katrina. It should be stated up front that if you are looking for a pristine, perfect hotel with full modern amenities, skip the Villa Convento. The hotel is showing its age, and my guess is that the owners are budgeting closely while the city and its tourism industry recover from the hurricanes. The carpet is worn, there is some peeling wallpaper and chipped paint, but for me these cosmetic flaws are mitigated by the old building's charm, its great location, and the friendly Campo family. I stayed several nights in 302, which I like because it's on top (no annoying footsteps overhead), has a balcony, and is away from the noisy elevator. I love the exposed worn brick and, while smaller than some hotel rooms, the room was roomy for me. It was spotless, and they've added hair dryers, irons, and ironing boards since my last stay. I like having the sink/vanity separate from the bathroom. There was a ceiling fan plus AC unit, which one needs in late October. There's also satellite TV. I grabbed newspapers from the street each morning and read them on the balcony as local folks washed off their stoops and swept their sidewalks below me. The Campos are always full of tourist tips, and I enjoyed meeting the newest family member, Oyster, a Lab they rescued from an oyster bed who hangs out behind the registration desk. Try the funky Clover Grill diner on 900 Royal for 24-hour-breakfast. There's also a full A&P grocery on Royal, and a Walgreen's near the Jax Brewery mall on the river. If you have a car, be aware that there is zoned parking everywhere in the Quarter, meaning many spaces are limited to two hours if you are not a resident. Also, construction vehicles take up a lot of parking space. I always find paid parking in lots on the edges of the Quarter, some of which use the honor system for payment. Oh, and don't be afraid when the tiny hotel elevator lurches and bumps on its way down -- it's been doing that for 20 years!

There is a house in New Orleans they call the Rising Sun...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/22/06
When I saw the Hotel Villa Convento on the internet, I knew I had been there before, not in this life but in a previous one. I decided I wanted to wake up on my 40th birthday in room 201 (it looks a little different post Katrina) and that's exactly what I did. The entire hotel, and especially room 201, has the thickest supernatural presence or aura of any place I've ever visited; it was phenomenal! It still gives me goosebumps to think about it. The hotel, rumored to be the House of the Rising Sun, an infamous brothel, is brimming with history and ambience. The lobby is small and quaint; the elevator is thickly padded with a fabric textile similar to old-fashion 'carpet'. Room 201 has a beautiful balcony view of St. Ursuline Street and the St. Ursuline Convent and graveyard. The room itself has antiuqes and lovely furniture and appointments. There is a separate vanity area in the room, and the bathroom was modern enough. The hotel's courtyard was typical of New Orlean's style courtyards, and the friendly staff served a continental breakfast that was better than most. The location was great: St. Ursuline Street is quiet, yet close to Bourbon Street and even closer to the French Market and the river front. When we were there, a US Navy ship docked, and that night the streets of New Orleans were filled with hundreds of happy sailors, which gave a feeling of mini-MardiGras, even though it was November. Speaking of November, it was about 90 degrees most days, and very humid, and I had not packed clothing for such warm days, but it gave me a chance to do some birthday shopping and buy new, lighter clothing. Shopping is one thing New Orleans has plenty of, and even the Villa Convento has its own t-shirts with a picture of the hotel silk-screened on. If you have never stayed at the Villa Convento, or if you fancy yourself receptive to supernatural abilities or experiences, then you MUST visit the Hotel Villa Convento.
