Disappointed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/19/09
Our family planned on staying 2 nights but after one night we wanted to leave. The room had insects flying around and the air conditioning was not working properly. I think that when you stay at that resort you should have at least one free ski lift ride and alpine slide ride. They were priced kind of high. Will definitely stay in town next time.

A little piece of Heaven!
By Auntie M., 07/18/09
My husband and I spend 2 joyful evenings at your resort. The sights were un-believeable and breathtaking! We once again found ourselves back to nature. The resort was so quiet and peaceful. The meals were delicious and the prices were not too bad. The location of the Resort is back into a quiet and peaceful, wooded area. We were real close to downtown Galena and the Diamond Jo.in Dubuque,so we found plenty of stuff to do for our stay. We got a great deal on our room. We stayed Wed. and Thur.nights and received our room for a great price. I know that we will again be staying at the Chestnut Mountain Resort,as will other members of our family. Thank You to all the staff. Mona & Don Dennis Milan,IL.

Hotel was Lacking
By mandi, 03/17/09
I had heard great reviews of Chestnut Mountain so my husband and I decided to make a weekend of it...and were very disappointed. The hotel was very outdated and as everyone before me stated it smells musty it was old and all of the food seemed very overpriced. It was like taking a trip back to a 1984 ski lodge....But i figure if you plan on skiing all day its a little easier to fall asleep on the carboard bed...heh. It wasnt worth the money and I would recommend staying at a hotel in Galena.

Would never recomend!!
By melody, 08/12/08
This was the WORST place that I have ever stayed. It was filthy and smelled. For example, there was toothpaste on the towel rack, the water was brown, no mattress pad etc....also the next morning I had a red blotches on my torso. We checked out ASAP. The staff was not friendly. Also, if you are planning on spending the day in Galena, it's a long winding road to get into town.

A taste of old world
By Patti, 09/30/07
I grew up next to a family from Austria. This hotel reminds me of their family room. The hotel may feel on the old side, but as a person who had great experiences in these types of hotels, I can't say enough about it. We took our kids there for the first time last year, unfortunatley, we will no longer be able to leave them with family because they loved it so much. You can not compare the views to anywhere around, the Alpine sides are so much fun , the locals in the pub are fun to watch and you do not have to maunuvere the roads afterwoards. the pool is very nice, yes it is simple place maybe to some, but ofor me it brings back memories of the old world, but where food is good and people are so nice and acoomodating. We have taken our bikes and biked to Elizabeth, not for the faint of heart, and ran from the hotel down the roads. You can not beat the scenery or the location.

Been there, done that, will ski again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/02/07
We drove up from Godfrey, Il, a beautiful drive. The staff, form check-in to dining room to housekeeping were very friendly and helpful, resort stay clean and comfortable. Skiing was great, my second time, my three kids' first, and my wife has skiied several times. Our oldest was twelve at the time, and he would only snowboard, it took alot of encouragement but the staff instructor for snowboarding went out of his way to make sure my son had the confidence he needed to go down intermediate slopes. When he was 13, wa came back and he was taking on expert slopes. Our two younger kids took to skiing very easily passing me by on Old Main, my favorite slope, like pros.

Horrible Experience!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/11/07
We chose Chestnut Mountain after reading all the positive reviews so naturally, we were beyond disappointed when we arrived. There was a horrible smell throughout the hotel, the staff was not polite at all and the rooms were absolutely filthy! Our bathroom was so filthy that a ring around the tub could clearly be seen. I'm not sure if the place is completely transformed for the winter because the accomodations were just disgusting when we were there. I would highly discourage people from staying at this "resort". Also, it should be noted that there were no elevators.

summer disappointment
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/03/07
We booked 3 rooms for 2 nights in July and what a disappointment. We did not end up staying for the second night. There was a terrible musty/dank smell throughout the hotel and the rooms are in real need of updating. From carpet to furniture to bathrooms. It may have been clean, but gave a very neglected feeling. We were told the dining room was open until 9:00 pm and when our party went in just before 7:00 pm, there was not any staff to be found. We ended up going into town just because there wasn't a sole around to even ask. The mini golf is a joke in very poor condition and they actually charge for it. Lastly, the staff didn't seem to care that we were there or not and they seemed to be a miserable group in general, no happier to be there than we were. Things may be different in the ski season, but DO NOT go here in the summer months.
