Will be back again
We obtain our trip through Costco and stayed 8 nights. While there we walked through the other resorts to see what they had and came to the conclusion that the Westin was a very good deal for the money. The Hyatt and Marriott are nicer, but so are their prices. If you have kids the Westin would be the place to be, as they have a number of pools and water slides for kids, plus an adult only pool area.
Food was good, but a bit pricey. The Costco package included the morning buffet for both of us, so that saved money. The Westin is next door to the Whaler's Village shopping center. There is a MacDonalds there so for a family with kids that is an option. If you are there long enough try the Hula Grill, Leilani's, and Cane & Taro. We ate at all three but thought Leilani's and the Cane & Taro were the better of the three.
How to save money at a meal - don't drink! Some mixed drinks, no matter where you are, cost $10 to $15 each (for some reason my wife seem to like those the best), so look before you order. BYOB is good advice to follow.
Both my wife and I agree on the staff of the hotel, they are all great, and go that extra bit to help or assist you. The lady who took care of our room, 679, was great.
A bit of advice, if you rent a car the Westin does have a parking lot where customers can park their rental cars, but the parking spaces are "tight". I was able to get our Mustang into most parking spaces, and only once did I have to enter the car from the right side when the car on the left was too close. When the lot is full a hotel employee will park the car in valet parking for you at no extra charge, I liked that.
About the beach in front of the hotel. The Westin's beach is pretty wide with lots of room for kids to play on. As you go south the beach begins to narrow and by the time you are at the Hyatt I would guess it may be twenty yards from the concrete walkway (which runs from the Hyatt north past the Westin) to the waters edge. North of the Westin the beach width pretty much stays the same width for about a quarter of a mile.
Another benefit of the beach area in front of the Westin, it seems to be where the UFO paragliding operation leaves from and comes back to.
If you golf there is good news,as a resort guest you can play golf at the Royal Ka'anapali or Ka'anapali Kai courses (across the street from the Westin) at a reduced rate. The bad news is the rate is $190 and $150 respectively. Although once you see these courses you may decide to spend some of the kids college fund on a round of golf.
If you go I hope you have as much enjoyment as my wife and I did.
