Hawaiian home-away-from-home

The Ilima hotel is on the Ala Wai side (the quiet side) of Waikiki, and a 5-minute walk (2 blocks) to the beach. It is a 99-unit property featuring condominium-sized studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Most features of a good hotel are present: excellent daily maid service, free local phone calls, interior (not outside) corridors, tour desk in lobby, pool, a new conference center, and so forth. Particularly notable is the truly warm and gracious hospitality of the entire staff. A high percentage of the Ilima's guests are repeat visitors, and the reason is obvious.
The one thing the Ilima lacks is traditional room service, since there's no dining room in the building. However, each unit has a fully equipped kitchen, especially convenient if you who don't want to go to a restaurant three times a day - and it's also easy to call out for a pizza, etc.
Another reviewer made an inaccurate reference to the Ilima's parking arrangements. There are 45 parking spaces (I counted them) in the two-tier garage for the use of guests, including two handicapped spaces. The hotel stresses the point that parking cannot be guaranteed. However, it is rare for demand to exceed available spaces and, when it does, any excess cars can use another garage directly across the street. What's noteworthy is that the Ilima is the only hotel in Waikiki with a completely free park-&-lock garage that occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. I always rent a car when visiting Honolulu, and always stay at the Ilima because of its unique blend of value and genuine quality. I've never had a problem finding a parking space - but if it happens, the problem is easily solved across the street. The Ilima Hotel is a little gem with lovely views of Manoa valley and the mountains north of Waikiki. It is exceptional well maintained and, after a few days, most folks feel like it's their second home.
