Castle Hilo Hawaiian
By D.N, 08/22/09
Likes - free parking and air conditioned room. The guest room was overall clean, and the bedding was immaculate--no brown stains or hairs. Lots of hot water! Dislikes - A $10.76 + tax charge on internet connection in the guest room! This is for a 24 hours service, and my stay for 2 nights costed me over $20.00! I found hair in the ice pail and other "biological" debris in it--ewwwwwwww! Yeah, you go imagine what I'm talking about! Housekeeper needs to check the cleanliness of the ice pail! Strands of hair in the bathroom sink and on the shower room door as well. Daily maid service was not provided, but the room had enough towels for our 2 nights stay. Since we came back to the room late, I didn't bother to complain to the front desk. The bathroom vanity mirror has a little sticker claiming that the hotel provides daily maid service. Go figure--maybe the maid was on sick leave or just forgot. However, the towels were clean. Conclusion - this hotel is probably the most decent hotel for its price. Aside from the strands of hair and other "biological" matter in the ice pail, I can stay here again. Hilo is a quiet town filled with nature--it's not a party town or like Waikiki. Your basic needs are met, but don't expect the glitz of a Vegas hotel. There's not many choices for a decent hotel in Hilo. The Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel has been here for a long time probably since Hawaii Five-O was aired. Don't expect glitz and keep your complaining to yourself because the friendly hotel folks are probably doing the best with what they can! I suggested you bring your own bar of soap and shampoo since the ones the Hotel provide are "Made in China!"

Tranquil,magical, area
By Dan, 08/14/09
Stayed there for 5 days in Dec. '08. Nice room, yeah dated, but geez, anybody have any appreciation of history. Hilo is an old town and I love the place. It's realllll-It is Hawaii. Food at the hotel is very mediocre-eat somewhere else-lot's of choices- ask the locals. View from an ocean room is tremendous. Interesting crowd at night in the hotel bar. Ken's house of Pancakes, good food low priceshuge portions, close by. Try Cronies in town-outstanding ahi sashimi-say hi to Tom the owner for me- tell him it's the guy writing "Tigershark." Hilo is a sacred place, it has a a feel about it unlike any other place I've been in Hawaii. I would stay at Castle Hilo again by the way.Lot's of sea turtles around the hotel in the bay for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!!! Dan

BEWARE
By Kevin, 06/03/09
I just got back from Hawaii, and I don't recommend staying at this hotel. The reason I say this is because my backpack was stolen out of my room which contained all of my valuables. The hotel manager wasn't very friendly when I reported the issue and didn't seem to want to help me find it. Luckily the local HPD was called in, and Office Autrata was able to step in an return my backpack to me. It turned out to be one of the hotel staff going into my room and taking only my backpack. The hotel didn't do anything for me once we found out that it was one of the hotel staff who stole my backpack. In the end, the staff member was arrested on 3 felonies. I do thank the local HPD for helping me get my belongings back.

Good hotel, so-so service
By Jeremy, 05/08/09
Good location on the sea with a nice little island garden. Lots of old Banyan trees. No accessible beaches nearby, but this whole part of the island is pretty rocky. Pool was too cold to use. Close to shopping and other small restaurants and bars. Restaurant was OK, pretty well-stocked breakfast buffet, although kind of pricey. They provided discount coupons for two buffets. Service was questionable; desk was understaffed and it took 1/2 to check in and out. Maid did not empty garbages and left trash on the counter. Clean towels were left in random places: on the bed, in the closet the next day, on my suitcase the third. Coffee pot provided, but they charge for tea and coffee, and you have to request replacement plastic cups. Hair dryers are provided, but you have to call down and have them brought up to the room. And not that you go to Hilo to watch TV, but the TV was about nine inches. Stay was OK overall, but it really shows that they are trying to cut corners to make money.

A nice beach front property
By Catherine, 05/01/09
Convenient location to everything in Hilo. The building is old, and very dated decor. But the service is good, and the beach view lanais (balconies) are awesome. The A/C unit in our room leaked, but the service tech came right away when we called. The restaurant has decent food, but is a little on the pricey side. Hopefully there will be some updating in the near future. All in all, a great location, and we would stay there again.

Rude
By PierceDesigns, 04/29/09
Me and my sister went to the main island for 2 days we wanted to stay at the Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel because my sister had stayed there before and said it was very nice. I went to diffrent sites to rent a room every site said they only had a few rooms at the price of $75 left we decided to risk it and see if we could just walk in and get a room. When we go there we asked if there was any rooms available she said yes they had a lot available, then we ask how much she said $85 we told her that we found it online for $75 she said maybe you should have bought it online. We would of stayed there but we felt they were very rude so we went down the street to a small local hotel. I dont have a problem with the hotel itself, but i feel because we are younger (18 and 22) if we are going to pay for a room they could treat all age groups the same.

loved it!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/11/08
Just got back from a 5 night stay at the Hilo Hawaiian and it was great! We had an ocean view room on the top floor and it was worth every penny. Quiet, relaxing and the view was spectacular. The staff was friendly, the pool was super clean and the room was spacious and comfortable. Just one WARNING: don't leave the sliding (glass) door open for too long...we did, and our room had a lot of little gnats flying around the room. It was nightime, so they were attracted to the lights in the room.

what a great experience!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/03/08
Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is a great place to stay. Could not ask for a better staff. The rooms were exceptional with staff coming in to clean every day. The view looking out onto the ocean was awesome. I would definitely go back for that. I have already recommended it to several people who have mentioned going to Hawaii. The experience was well worth the time and money. Castle Hilo Hawaiian was a very peaceful place to stay. Thank You to all the staff for everything.

Very nice.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/20/08
Stayed in this hotel while on the east side of the Big Island.  Gorgeous grounds!! Immaculately kept. Room comfortable but decor somewhat outdated. Beautiful view from the room's balcony.  Location is great. Close to Hilo's main attractions. Can even walk to some.  Food in restaurant was "okay". Had a very nice stay there and would definitely stay there again.
