Disappointing

After a week-long trip through the Northeast, we thought that our stay in the Crowne Plaza would be the best hotel experience so far. However, this turned out to be untrue. Although our stay was mediocre at worst, there were several occurrences and disturbances that contributed to a slightly less-restful-than-expected night.
When we arrived at the Crowne after 8 pm, we entered the lobby and checked in. As we were checking in, five or six men in raggedy dress and carrying empty beer bottles trooped into the lobby, talking loudly, and went up in the elevators! We thought that perhaps there was a garbage-man's convention going on at the time and were not happy to see what type of guests were staying at this apparently "luxury" hotel.
Although many people were simply parked downtown on the street in Hartford, parking cost $15 at this hotel. We were disappointed in this cost and especially since the underground parking garage smelled positively disgusting and absolutely revolting and was also practically empty. This in addition to the bizarre appearance of the guests mentioned above contributed to our apprehension about our experience.
We entered our room after going through terribly-smelling common areas and were at least relieved by the fact that our room did not smell of anything terribly unpleasant. However, the bathroom, which had a most upmarket shower curtain and railing, had an old disgusting-looking bath that I certainly would not have sat down in to take a bath! There was also no visible ventilation in the bathroom, so the shower caused a disgusting layer of steam to appear on the window, which had not happened in any hotel so far on our trip!
The room was adequate and the beds were also quite nice. I was very happy about the abundance of pillows, and the soft mattress. However, the airconditioner had not been updated in perhaps centuries and as a result wheezed throughout the night as if it had smoked much too many cigarettes in its lifetime, and given the state of the rest of the hotel we deduced that perhaps it did!
The hotel had many items in the room to "sleep soundly," like linen spray, and a CD with sleeping music and sounds on it. However, it was difficult to sleep due to the wheezing and loud airconditioner and the three highways right beside the hotel, which separated it from downtown Hartford! We had to endure all the disgusting conditions AND be separated by the city by three DISGUSTING highways! It was the most absurd arrangement I had encountered for a long time.
The good beds made up for most of the problems above, however, and the desk and chair were an excellent workplace. The breakfast buffet was too expensive, and there was no one in the lobby to check out in the morning; when we got back from putting suitcases back into the car, there were people at the front desk, but they were irritable and rude.
There are better choices in Hartford, but if you really want to save money, one or two nights will be bearable (hopefully). It was bearable for us, especially the lovely soft beds, but it was overall a mediocre, average hotel experience from what we expected to be at least half a world-class hotel.
Note: a better choice would be the cheaper Sheraton Hartford, which we had stayed in previously.
