Keep your expectations low at this resort!
Upon arrival, we were given a room that was already occupied! Not a great sign when you walk into a room, and there are people in the bed. Ugh! I quickly shut the door, and the bellman called the front desk who reassigned us to a new room, this one on the ground floor. Well, let me first of all suggest that if you decide to stay here, get a second floor room! the ceilings are so thin you hear every footstep from above. Anyway, as far as the rooms are concerned, they are completely average. the "westin heavenly beds" are the one selling point, they are super comfortable. But the bathroom is about what you'd expect in a best western or a holiday inn - NOT luxury resort quality. Small older tubs, clean but stained. Patched wallpaper, no full length mirrors - these guys are a long way from competing with the higher end rancho mirage resorts.
The main pool is fine, shallow and big with a water slide. Bar service only goes until 5 p.m., and the water slide closes at 6 p.m. even though the pool is open until 10 p.m.. Several times the ice water jugs by the pool ran out, and once the bar closes, there's no one around to get water from. This is not good in 100 degree heat. The pool area also seemed to get kind of trashed after the bar area closes - a lot of empty cups around the pool and wet towels on most of the lounge chairs that just weren't getting picked up.
Far and away my biggest complaint was the restaurant. Do Not Eat There. The food ranged from mediocre to awful, and all tasted like it had been frozen or came out of a can. And yet they charge top prices. We had a fantastic dinner at Roy's, an elegant upscale restaurant in town on Hwy.111, and it cost the same that the lousy dinner at the hotel cost. One of the items we ordered was a "wood fired pizza", and upon getting it, it was clear that it was nothing but a frozen pizza, probably Tombstone or some such brand. At close to $20! I ordered the "fresh atlantic cod", well, it may have been fresh ONCE, but not in the recent past. I actually ended up complaining to the manager about the quality of the food, and they removed the pizza and another item from our bill. Bottom line, there are a million other restaurants in the area, pass the hotel restaurants by. The pool food is poor as well, I ordered the chips and gaucamole, and got a huge plate of stale tortilla chips and a very small plastic cup of store-bought guacamole, and another of jarred salsa. I think it was around $14.
If you get a great rate, as I did through a starwood promo, it's an okay place to stay. Good location, near everything. But don't be fooled into thinking this is a 4-star resort and paying anything near rack rate. This hotel has potential, but it's FAR from luxury right now.
