Better off elsewhere
By ,
I agree with the other reviews in that the Westgate does have elegant Old World charm. However, we are paying New World prices and I didn't feel this hotel lived up to its rating. For example, "Complimentary coffee" is listed under the amenities. They fail to mention that it is served only until 7 AM. We went down at 8 AM and asked for a cup, which they gladly brought us for $4 per cup! The rooms looked nice, but every person in our group woke up with backaches. Watch your step going into the elevators because they don't line up right with the floor. The staff was friendly and polite, but a bit slow; it took an hour to get a few extra blankets. For the price you are paying, you are better off at the Marriott.

RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!
By ,
I went to California 2005 to see my brother which is in the navy. This was the worst place I have ever stayed. The people here did not give me a good impression of California people. First of all, Yeah the tell you that they have parking for guest but don't add that it cost 20.00 a day to park in there parking garage, which in it's location is basically your only choice. Secondally, my grandmother who requires oxygen and can't walk very far without getting out of breath, required a wheelchair. The people at the front guest was not willing to help us locate a business that rented wheelchairs on a daily basis. We had to try and locate ourselves, and not being from CA, was very hard to do. And last but not least, the hidden charges that they charge was crazy. Make sure if you stay, (which I hope you don't unless you won't your trip to be a disaster) WATCH THE HIDDEN CHARGES! example: newspaper delivered to door-extra fee.

The place is beautiful
By ,
The room service was great and the view is awesome. The only thing is that even with an expensive hotel they couldn't give you free radio through the tv.

What a wonderful hotel!
By ,
My husband and I visited in September 2005. When we first arrived, we were welcomed by a very gracious and courteous staff. The rooms are very warm and cozy. They have very spacious bathroom and bedroom areas. The bathroom tub and shower have made of marble. The bedroom was very comfortable and view was awesome. The minibar was a bit over priced but this is to be expected. We stayed 2 weeks for training that I received through my law firm. The services from the daily paper services to the breakfast in bed was awesome. I would recommend this for a weekend getaway. Nightlife around the hotel: from a mall (2 blocks away) to various eateries with daily and evening specials.

Love Europe? This hotel can take you there. Beautiful rooms, excellent food, great staff. The hotel is conveniently located in downtown San Diego. Park the car and ride the trolley or walk!

excellent hotel
By ,
what a great hotel! Some thing I noticed on other reviews/general information listed which is not correct. * It's definatly not a timeshare as one reviewer said. * It's not a 4 star its a 5 star AND a LHW (Leading Hotel of the World... only 257 of them on the planet). CH

Perfect location & ambiance.
By ,
This hotel has an old world feel with the architecture, art niches and well-appointed guest rooms. The staff is polite and friendly. Our room, both times, had a great view of the bay and coronado bridge. Each room has a small balcony and having the doors open to the fresh air was wonderful. The location is right in the heart of the gaslamp and the trolly is right behind the hotel. We went both times for Chargers Games and the location next to the trolley was priceless. This hotel isn't inexpensive, but it was well worth the price we paid for what felt like a mini-suite. The mini-bar was well-appointed. I've heard others mention about ice, but we had ice in our room when we got back at night, and the one time we asked it arrived within minutes. Small restaurant for breakfast was delicious and great service. Definitely a must stay if looking for luxury while in San Diego.

Surprise in the Middle of Downtown
By ,
Right in the middle of the downtown mall of San Diego is a major treasure of a hotel. The Westgate Hotel is a hidden gem with all the old world charm and elegance of the finest European hotels. From the moment you enter the lobby with its heirloom European furniture you know you are in a special place. You are greeted by friendly, courteous employees at every turn and the check in people are helpful and accomodating. More importantly, when you get up to your room you are met with understated elegance and total comfort and papmering. From the towels to the terry cloth robes and the plush beds the rooms have it all and you know you are in the lap of luxury. The quality doesn't stop with the personnel or the rooms. The Westgate's restaurants are also first class. The dinners are excellent and the Sunday brunch is a gustatorial delight able to satisfy the pickiest of eaters. Overall ones stay at the Westgate is going to be one fit for a king and one that you will remember for years to come!
