These are embodied in each guestroom, as are some of the most spectacular views anywhere. This intimate luxury hotel has 151 guest rooms, and 7 stunning suites. Be careful of bathroom views
By ,
Having lived and worked in SF for 15 years, the word is well around to bring your binoculars to work and focus in on the bathrooms.

THERE IS NONE BETTER
By ,
I have been staying in "luxury" hotels from Rome to Tokyo and everywhere in between for over 30 years. I have stayed at both the Four Seasons and the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco, and I have NO idea why The Mandarin Oriental is ranked #2. It is, quite simply, my favorite hotel in the world. The breathtaking views speak for themselves; what is more (and most) important, however, is the fact that the staff remembers what service used to be like in the United States..and embodies the highest standards. The only pity is, these days, this exquisite level of service and luxury is wasted on those who know the price of everything (nobody's pretending the place is cheap) and the value of nothing.

location was perfect

The location was perfect and the staff went out of their way to assist us with information on ski packages, tours and shopping. The service was great! The complimentary breakfast was a real treat and a money saver. We met other guests from all over the United States and enjoyed visiting with them.

No Better View....
By ,
The view is the beginning and end for this hotel. It is, of course, a fabulous place as far as service and comfort. BUT, the view is simply the best thing they have to offer bar none. As many others have noted here, it is small feeling because the lobby is the first floor of this very high rise building (3rd highest in SF we were told) and it is rather...compact. Very nice and has a comfortable seating area with small bar. The restaurant is the second floor and then its up the elevators to the 38th-48th floors for the rooms. Offices occupy the other floors. It is truly a sight to see being up on the 48th floor (we were upgraded thanks to Am Exp program)corner room where we looked from one side over at Bay Bridge and ATT park and then the other window at the bay, piers, Coit tower and Alcatraz. Especially pretty at night. SO high up it was almost a bit unsettling :) The 2 towers of the building are joined by a "skywalk" which is a hall way connecting the 2 towers of room to the elevator area on the4-5 highest floors. Views from here are also amazing. It was always fun being throughout the city and looking for our very distinguishable building with its 2 towers each with a flag on it joined by that glass walkway. The neighborhood is the finacial district but were happy to find it was not far of a walk to North Beach and the Italian district on Columbus so we did that Saturday night and it wasn't too far at all. It is also close to the TransAmerica (pyramid) building so we always knew which directing to go to get back ! We didn't eat at the hotel but had been recommended to a nice Italian place around the corner on California st. called Perbacco and we loved it. They told us they were booked up, even when the hotel called for us( they sometimes have more pull) but we just decided to walk over and go in; they told us 20 min. wait ! No problem ! We sat at bar and didn't even get to order our drink and they were seating us ! Always worth a try, you never know ! Food was awesome although not your typical italian-- the Gnocchi was Heaven !!! Chocolate torte with roasted hazelnuts at dessert was also amazing. So, although the hotel itself is fine, very asian, very gold and red and black, but very nice - it is the VIEW from it that makes it special. I would return only, I think, if they did a complete redecorate to something more sleek and modern like other Mandarin hotels elsewhere. But, for the view, it still gets a rave from us !

Vey Nice
By ,
My wife and I stayed here for our 25th anniversary. The rooms have incredible views of the bay, the bridge, and downtown. The room was large, nicely appointed, and the hotel's location in the heart of San Francisco, means you can walk or take public transportation to almost any locale in minutes. It also provided very good value as parking (a huge expensive in San Francisco) and breakfast were included in the room rate. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

Customer Service

The finest customer service I've ever experienced. At least "Ritz" quality. Super views on higher floors. Beautiful tub in bathroom where you can soak and look out of a picture window onto SF.

Great view but not on par with the competition
By ,
We recently spent the weekend at the SF Mandarin Oriental. While the view and room were very nice the room service, food, and overall experience was not on par with other 5 star locations like the Ritz Carlton or St. Regis. If there were a rating for room service food I would have to give it a 1 star. I've had better food at low end hotels. The front desk staff was cordial but cold. We actually had to dig at them to get details on the package we purchased for our stay. If all you're looking for is view and quiet, this is your place. If however you want the total 5 star experience you're better off going to the Ritz Carlton in SF or Half Moon Bay.
