No Better View....

The view is the beginning and end for this hotel. It is, of course, a fabulous place as far as service and comfort. BUT, the view is simply the best thing they have to offer bar none. As many others have noted here, it is small feeling because the lobby is the first floor of this very high rise building (3rd highest in SF we were told) and it is rather...compact. Very nice and has a comfortable seating area with small bar. The restaurant is the second floor and then its up the elevators to the 38th-48th floors for the rooms. Offices occupy the other floors. It is truly a sight to see being up on the 48th floor (we were upgraded thanks to Am Exp program)corner room where we looked from one side over at Bay Bridge and ATT park and then the other window at the bay, piers, Coit tower and Alcatraz. Especially pretty at night. SO high up it was almost a bit unsettling :) The 2 towers of the building are joined by a "skywalk" which is a hall way connecting the 2 towers of room to the elevator area on the4-5 highest floors. Views from here are also amazing. It was always fun being throughout the city and looking for our very distinguishable building with its 2 towers each with a flag on it joined by that glass walkway. The neighborhood is the finacial district but were happy to find it was not far of a walk to North Beach and the Italian district on Columbus so we did that Saturday night and it wasn't too far at all. It is also close to the TransAmerica (pyramid) building so we always knew which directing to go to get back !
We didn't eat at the hotel but had been recommended to a nice Italian place around the corner on California st. called Perbacco and we loved it. They told us they were booked up, even when the hotel called for us( they sometimes have more pull) but we just decided to walk over and go in; they told us 20 min. wait ! No problem ! We sat at bar and didn't even get to order our drink and they were seating us ! Always worth a try, you never know ! Food was awesome although not your typical italian-- the Gnocchi was Heaven !!! Chocolate torte with roasted hazelnuts at dessert was also amazing.
So, although the hotel itself is fine, very asian, very gold and red and black, but very nice - it is the VIEW from it that makes it special. I would return only, I think, if they did a complete redecorate to something more sleek and modern like other Mandarin hotels elsewhere. But, for the view, it still gets a rave from us !
