Twice/yr in S.D./1st and Last Time at Kona Kai
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/20/09
I chose the location, so a 5 is only fair. Service: Only hotel to ever not let me check in early. Only hotel I ever heard tell a prospective patron no rooms were available to evaluate. Small rooms. Tiny bathroom sink. Internet rarely/barely works. Parking expensive. $10 gym charge for one hour's time. Hotel Lunch options over priced. Lunch shift workers asked me to pay before I completed my lunch. I won't recommend this hotel. If you do choose this hotel, I hope your stay is a pleasant one.

Can't wait to go back!
By Stephanie, 02/28/09
I reserved this room despite the previous reviews. I figured with the nice location how bad can it be? I don't know where everyone else stayed before but the IS a three star hotel!!! I believe that for the price it was a great value. I believe that this is what a three star should offer-if you want more pay the extra money and reserve a 4 or 5 star hotel! The on site restaurant was delicous. It's very nice views and imaginative menu was refreshing. The seafood Cobb was excellent! The best salmon I have ever tasted. As far as the room goes...the ONLY complaint was that the ottoman in the room was visible soiled and had a cigarette burn on it. Other than that everything was great. Beautiful hotel, polite service staff, quiet rooms. If the price is right we will definitely stay again. Not work more than $100 per night as I know prices soar in the summer months in San Diego.

Nice - but . . .
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/25/09
I got "stuck" there and did not have much choice. You had better have a vehicle or you are stuck there - no transportation. The restaurant was lovely, but the food was way over priced. If I had a vehicle, I would consider staying there again.

No value, no service.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/03/09
The best thing I could say about Kona Kai is the location, but then there are other choices on Shelter Island and elsewhere in San Diego. You only have to read others' reviews of the condition of the rooms to get the picture; I had a similar experience and have nothing to add in that department. My real problem was with the complete lack of good service and even a sense of accountability among staff, even at the management level. Honestly, the best hotel I've stayed in in this part of San Diego was at the Holiday Inn San Diego at 1355 N Harbor Drive. I enjoyed the service and the on-site restaurant. From my waterfront room at the Holiday Inn I had great views, and enjoyed watching the grand cruise ships arrive and load passangers. Stay away from Kona Kai!!

Would NOT stay here again
By e komo mai, 11/09/08
PRO'S: - clean room, nice view of the marina, quiet at night but you can hear door slamming from other rooms next door or across the hallway. - beds are comfortable, clean. Bathroom is clean, every thing in our room was in good working order. CON'S: - Customer Service at front desk is unknowledgeable & rude. - Hotel Manager is also rude & unprofessional. - $15 a day for parking & they do not even put it on their website - $10 per person just to use the Fitness Center (fees subject to change) - Ridiculous, outrageous prices on room service. bottom line is, i would NOT call this a resort at all, i been to many other hotels that are 50 times better than this place. For the price they charge & the poor treatment I received, this is my first & LAST time staying at this hotel. I would NOT recommend this hotel to any one.

i disliked the 15.00 parking charge the room was immaculate but just your standard size. the write up about this place leads you to believe it is huge. i would stay here again. it was very quiet here.

Dumpy room
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/17/08
The setting is very nice, and the pool is nice but the room we received was a complete dump. Paid for "water view" room, but our room had a 50% view of the parking lot. The screen door to the patio area wouldn't open and was in terrible disrepair. Really couldn't enjoy the one thing we were looking forward to view of the bay(because of the broken sliding glass door and broken screen). The bathroom door wouldn't close or lock, and the bathtub was ancient. They were charging $179 for the room on a Sunday! I overheard someone saying that the other buildings in the hotel were renovated, but obviously not this one. Worse the than the worse Motel 6. No, motor 6 maintains there facilities. Okay if you are looking for setting only and don't care if your room is ready for demolition.

Great Stay! No Problems at All!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/07/08
We had an excellent time at this hotel/resort! The rooms were super cute with a nice balcony area, prefect for lunch, overlooking the bay. We watched sail boats come and go and then had dinner at the hotel restaurant. Food was great! all the employees were super nice and helpful. The pool area was clean and the bar was close by. Stayed 2 nights, wish I was still there!

Had to Change Hotels
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/27/08
We stayed here for 1 night. We were supposed to stay 2 nights, but got refunded and moved hotels. We paid extra for a water view and there was road construction obstructing the view. There were cones in the way and in the morning, there were several trunks parked there or driving by. The trunks were so noisy in the morning around 10 AM that it shook our room. We ate breakfast on the patio to the loud noise of trunks. Construction went on for most of the day when we were at the hotel. It made it difficult to drive out of the hotel because the trunks were blocking the road. The ocean view was pretty despite the cones and road construction, but the hotel is not close to the beach. It isn't right in the city (downtown). It is also confusing to find the place for the first time. We were in a building that didn't have elevators. We walked around and didn't see anything and had to carry all of our luggage up the stairs. There was also a dead fly on the floor of the bathroom when we first arrived there and a hair in the bath tub. The light switch was cracked and one of the tiles had a huge crack in it. The set up of the room was weird with the desk hiding in the back. The internet broke and I called the front desk and all they said was, "Okay." They were quiet and their tone of voice was rude even though I was being polite about it. The internet didn't work at night and I went to sleep and it was finally working in the morning. The hotel didn't offer to have anyone check to see if the access point was down or send anyone to fix the internet (and this was at 5 PM). It is obvious the internet problem was with them when it worked and all of a sudden stopped working and then worked in the morning with no problem. The workers at the front desk weren't friendly when we first checked in. The only thing good about the place was the room service was fast and the food was pretty good. The manager was also very kind and understanding about how we felt about the road work.
