Don't bother - Badly needs updating, not worth the money

We stayed at the Hotel Laguna for one night wanting a relaxing getaway that's on the beach but within walking distance to restaurants, nightlife, etc. While the location is good, the hotel for the price is terrible. We paid $240 - supposedly a discounted AAA rate for a "garden & ocean view" room. And that was a Thurs night when it's week-day (not the higher weekend) pricing. While I could see and hear the ocean, the rooms were horrible. I've stayed in 2 star motels and Quality Inn's that were cleaner and more updated! The lobby made it look promising, but it stopped there. The room was very small (and I travel to New York city frequently and have had bigger rooms for the price), the carpet had black spots, the walls looked like they haven't been painted in 20 years (scratch marks, dirt, cracks), the brown bed comforter looked well-used and dingy, the room was small and had early 80's fabric furniture & headboard that also looked old, the bathroom tile was cracked and grout was black in many spots, there was a very small old sink that only had only one knob working - hot water only, the cold didn't work - and the courtyard I looked down on had plastic tables & chairs and was not used by anyone. If you go to their web site you'll notice a lack of pictures - I get why! And while they say they have a "private beach" - its on the main beach in Laguna with everyone else, they just rope off about 35 feet by 20 feet of space in front of their hotel and put out some chairs. This place has potential and could become charming if the owners would put even a little money in to renovating it (carpet, paint, new bedspread, new headboard - the curtains were the only nice thing in the room). But in the meantime, for $230 you can get a WAY better hotel room in Laguna Beach. I was extremely dissapointed and won't return unless its given an overhaul - or pricing was half of what they're charging.
