Horrible Hotel!
By ,
Our family was GREATLY disappointed with this hotel. First of all; the location is adequate at best. Certainly not an excellent location. We were given the impression that it was on the ocean when booking but it most certainly is not. Second we paid over $300 a night. Not cheap! Expected a lot more in return. The service is horrible! The people who work here just don't care. They don't smile, greet you or anything. Most certainly not friendly. Third; we found a cockroach in our bathroom! Not sanitary at all! Told the front desk when we checked out the following day and they didn't even say sorry.... I'm sorry that we chose this hotel and we most certainly don't recommend. Maybe if they spent less time responding negative reviews and more time on correcting their problems then they can be worthy of saying 4 stars which this hotel is not!

very unhappy stay!
By ,
My wife and I stayed here for the weekend and we couldn't be more unhappy with our stay. The service was very bad from the moment we checked in to the dining experience at this hotel. The staff who work here aren’t too bright. A lot of mistakes with our reservation and not friendly at all. I'm not sure how they claim that they are 4 stars? Very peculiar because it certainly isn't in our opinion. For the money you pay they need to do a much better job because we definately wouldn't recommend this hotel.

I want to live there
By ,
Ok, so they didn't have a business center or a gym, but what they did have made up for it. The decor was gorgeous throughout. The historical charm has been kept intact. In fact, they had good old fashioned dangerous windows that opened all the way with no screens, which were open when we arrived so the fresh ocean air filled the room. The beds were comfortable. The yellow terry cloth, cotton-lined robes were cozy. Upon returning from an afternoon walk, we came back to discover that "someone's been messing with my bed" a la Goldilocks & the 3 bears. This was the first time I'd experienced turn down service, complete with slippers and a chocolate. The best thing in La Jolla - I didn't want to leave!

Lost Reservation
By ,
We made a reservation and received a confirmation number for one of their older rooms. They told us that they would put us on a waiting list for one of their newer rooms that they were adding on to the hotel. We called back a month later to see how that was going and they told us that they had no confirmation number for us and did not see our name in any reservation. When I told them the name of the person who helped us. He said she was no longer with the company and that that is why. They were not willing to help us and said they had a room available but at twice the cost we were quoted. They also wanted us to sign a contract by fax, before we could even talk about a reservation. You would think they would honor what one of their employees had confirmed and quoted. How could they loose a confirmation number? Very irresponsible!

great
By ,
This hotel is in the heart of La Jolla, on the main drag, Prospect St. Two blocks from the surf, short walks to food and shopping, location could not be better. The hotel room was excellent. Bed was one of the softest and most comfortable I've been in. Wireless in rooms is free. (My only complaint is that I had a Lost in Translation moment in the shower with the short showerhead. Not the best situation for anyone over 5'8".) I would describe the room as understated California charm. Hotel bar is small and trendy, and part of elegant restaurant Nine-Ten. For what we're paying ($190/night), this is an exceptional value. Of course, La Jolla is one of the most special places on earth, so that's the main thing, but we had an excellent time at the hotel.

Would not go back
By ,
Quaint hotel, but they run their dumpster/trash compactor right under your window at 1am and then again at 6am despite my calling the front desk and complaining. No offer to remedy or move the room. Food is excellant in high-end resturant.

Historic Charmer
By ,
If you are like me and like to stay in hotels with some historic charm, the Grande Colonial is a great choice. We stayed on the 3rd floor in a sunny room with a partial view of the ocean. It had some lovely architectual details including beautiful floor to ceiling windows, crown moldings, glass door knobs, mirrored french doors to the closet. The best feature was the bathroom which was spacious and had beautiful 20's black and white tile and marble. Also, the Grand Colonial has a great location! Right on Prospect (the main shopping street) and only about 3 minute walk down to the beaches. Service was great! Very efficient and friendly from the desk clerks, housekeeping, and valets. NOTE: Valet parking was $16/night for hotel guests.

Magnificent
By ,
The location was fabulous and The Grande Colonial was like a bed and breakfast but with the comforts of a hotel. Being a local of San Diego, I wanted to show my Bostonian fiance a bit of La Jolla and the Grande Colonial was just perfect for that. If you want a nice, quiet hotel in the heart of La Jolla, this is your place. It was a great experience for us.

Great location & place to stay!
By ,
What a wonderful historic hotel. With unique boutique rooms and a fantastic restaurant, NINE-TEN, in the hotel, I feel this hotel has just about everything you could ask for.

Poor Service
By ,
I think they are depending on reputation more then true service. My experience anyways.
