Super 8 Monterey Carmel, Monterey

Don't know what reviewers who rated this motel as "poor" were looking at or for. I have stayed at this motel several times and have always found it very clean, comfortable, quiet, convenient and friendly. Good location and still one of the least expensive places I've found in Monterey. The desk clerk has always been friendly and, though I'm only in the area once a year, she actually remembers me from stay to stay - some would doubt she is being sincere but she mentions specific things from previous visits that indicate she really does remember me. I have made this my first (only) choice for my annual visits to the Monterey area!!

The staff was polite, the room a good size with refrigerator and microwave. Great location. Only trouble was that we left covered with bed bug bites. Staff didn't believe us when we called them back. He said my husband had already called to complain and he had the exterminator out, who found nothing. Trouble is that wasn't my husband who called, it was a different guest entirely. They definitely have an infestation. Now we are worried that we have transported the bugs home. Nearly impossible to get rid of. Told by our exterminator it will cost $2,000 to tent our house. Ugh!

Service was downright rude, did not get AAA rate despite being a AAA member, toilet only flushed when it felt like it, the bed was very old and uncomfortable, high-speed wireless internet was slower than snail-mail. The check-in process was one of the worst I ever dealt with. My reservation was under my brother-in-law's reservation. When I told them that I will pay separately I was told that the rate since booking went up from $129 to $150 but that i would get the $129 rate. I told them that I want the AAA rate as I am a member they would not let me have the AAA rate as I did not present my AAA card at check-in. My husband joined me later and showed them our AAA card and they still would not give us the AAA rate. Also, keep in mind the complete reservation was made with AAA discount and the fact that I paid my own bill should not have changed the rate! When I complained about the rate (as this is not a 4 star hotel but just a motel) I was told to just deal with it as this is Monterey and they can asked for whatever they want. Being it Monterey does not make this place a 4 star hotel. At one point I was even asked to take my money back and to go to a different motel/hotel. This gives you an idea how rude the staff was. I travel a lot for business and stay frequently at hotels and I never had such a bad experience no matter where I went. I was quite taken back by the hostile attitude that I encountered. My family wanted to extend their stay for one more night but opted not to do this as all of a sudden the rate went from $129 to $309 (for a motel!!!!)! When I confronted the staff that the Hilton Garden Inn around the corner might be able to charge this amount but not a motel I was told the Hilton charges $1000 a night! I checked with the Hilton and they charged $350 for the same night! This gives you an idea how the staff at the hotel is taking advantage of their customers. This was a sad experience for my family who are on vacation and came all the way from Europe.

Perfect base for exploring the area. Easy to find first of all and handy for noth getting into downtown Monterey, Pacific Grove or heading to Carmel and 17 mile drive. Room clean, comfortable with fridge. Breakfast also good. Would stay again, no question.

The staff was friendly. Also the rooms were clean and very large perfect for travel. All the rooms had a microwave and refrigerator. Also location is the best and within walking distance to Del Monte Shopping Center. I would definitely stay here again.
