Hillside Inn is in a great location for shopping at Montgomery stores or visiting local sights. Because we have family nearby, we've stayed there repeatedly and have never had a bad experience. It's a very well-maintained older property with on-site owner/managers and an outstanding restaurant. The rooms are large and the beds are comfortable. I have to think that the extremely negative reviews came from someone with a personal grudge. They sure don't fit our very positive experiences.
I stayed here with my girlfriend for my birthday and we had a great stay. No "bed bugs", no rudeness (quite the opposite, the owner was friendly and helpful). I have to really wonder when I read these other reviews about their veracity... Anyhow, I can definitely recommend the Hillside to anyone traveling in the area. We actually live in Santa Rosa and eat at the breakfast place next door to it all the time (Hillside Cafe). Best breakfast in town by the way...
We live in San Francisco and came up to Sonoma Valley for one night. Stayed in room 217 on 7/22/2011. We came home the next day late at night. i was covered with red, bumps that itched like heck! Called the owner to tell him about it. The owner hung up the phone on my husband. The next day I called myself, since I could not sleep due to the painful itching. The owner said that he will investigate the matter and he said that he owes me nothing and hung up on me! RUDE service! Those people should not be working with public!
The people who run the place are crazy. I got back late from a wedding party and the manger ran out cussing at us and side he was going to call the cops on us. I called the operator for ice shortly after and it seem that it goes strait to there home, he yelled again at me said he was calling the cops. During check out I was called a "prick" and other things by him and what I imagin to be his wife. These people do not deserve your money. Go else where.
Stayed for a week with a disabled elderly family member- so I needed a place with a kitchen. Old, funky, but serviceable. No handicap room available- and only access to rooms from handicap parking in front requires going through 2 spring loaded HEAVY gates next to the pool. Dont expect to have privacy, if you put up the "do not disturb" sign, you get a call from the rude manager insisting it is "house rules" that the maid comes in- even if you are there, in bed! And the 2nd bedroom had no heat, and when you leave the maids open up the windows and turn the heat off! If you enjoy verbal confrontations with the owner who is "giving you the privledge of staying there" go ahead and make a reservation.
I am a Santa Rosa local, and recently sent my parents, a renowned professor and my mom, recently having undergone open heart surgery, plus their show-bred collie (pets are allowed at the hotel) to the Hillside Inn as our home was undergoing major renovation.
When they arrived at the hotel on Saturday night, the manager noticed the pet, and forcibly commanded... yes very rudely confronted my father and commanded that he appear immediately at the front desk, where it was rudely and very abusively commanded that the pet be removed from the property immediately. There was no escalation, and the manager provided no Compromise, no Refund, and was frankly very confrontational. Dumbfounded, my father called, and fortunately we were able to make some room at my home a couple miles away. I would imagine that their options would have been somewhat limited considering that it was Saturday Eve in Wine Country.
My mother also reported some abuse to some poolside guests earlier in the day by the same gentleman.
It was truly the most bizarre experience my father has ever been through, a frequent world traveler. Because of the experience, the hotel has been reported to AAA and I am posting this anywhere I can on the Internet to warn those interested in staying in Santa Rosa to choose somewhere else, or to stay at your own risk
