Be careful if you have to cancel!

When I called and cancelled, the girl "Crystal" couldn't find my reservation and seemed confused. After some time she finally found it and told me the reservation was cancelled. I travel a lot, but cancel seldom. Unfortunately, I only wrote her name down and the time I made the call on my notes, but wasn't offered and didn't ask for a cancellation number.
I was charged for the room. After several call (not toll free) to the hotel, I was finally told that without a cancellation number, there was nothing they could do. After a long to the corporate office of Best Western I was finally told the same thing.
Nothing they could do? I did talk to a "Crystal" and did cancel, I just didn't get a cancellation number.
