Westmark Baranof Hotel, Juneau

The staff was amazing. Treated you like family. The restaurant, The Gold Room, was to die for. If ever given the chance to go back to Juneau, will only stay here. This hotel rivals any I stayed at anywhere for all around service.

I stayed at the Baranof when it was the best Juneau had to offer. I found it to be a very classy place. Of course, this was back in 1964 so I imagine with all the run of the mill large chain hotels it lacks all the amenities they offer. I chose this hotel because of all the history associated with the name Baranof a.k.a. Baranov and Juneau.

Stayed at the Westmark Baranof for 7 days on a business trip. PROS: Nice Lobby. Great downtown location. Walking distance to restaurants, bars, movie theaters and gift shops, and cruise ship terminals. (If you are walking, ignore the fact that the streets are packed with drunks. They are all very harmless and some are quite nice. ) If you need a department store, you will have a bit of a drive. Airport is a bit of a drive also. Price seemed to be about on course for Juneau. CONS: Very old hotel and not even as close to being grand as their advertising would suggest. I am sure in the 40’s it was great. Very small rooms. I only had about 1.5 feet at the end of the bed. Cheap furniture, ZERO extras. I had a major problem with the serious mold issue in the shower and in the closet. If you have health or respiratory issues, this is definitely not the place to stay. I travel a lot and can say without a doubt, this is the worst bed I have ever slept in in a long time. I also did not like the two very thin pillows they give you. A queen size bed only gets you two flat pillows. No extras in the closet. Zero ventilation in the room. If you take a shower, the room is still humid that afternoon. This could explain the mold problem. Parking lot in the back of the building. When you are trying to haul luggage to and from your car, you have to walk around the building and up a hill. In bad weather, this may not be ideal for you. They offer “non-smoking” rooms, but my room definitely had been smoked in. furthermore, the other rooms in the hallway were smoking and the nasty smell would seep into my room. Walls are paper thin. Better hope that you do not get neighbors that snore or like to watch TV late like I did. 7 nights, not a single night of good sleep. I was a zero maintenance guest, so I cannot comment on the staff other than for check in and check out. The clerks there seemed to be very unprofessional. I had to wait quite a while for the clerk to come out from the back room. Sounded like they were watching TV. I probably should not have interrupted them. There was no greeting, thank you, come again or any other comments that you would expect from hotel staff. Did not eat at the restaurant since I thought it was overpriced. Given all that, I will not stay here again. However, after driving around, I am not sure if there are any stand out hotels.

For the price ($200 w/tax), this was the biggest disappointment of our entire trip!!! The rooms were the tiniest ever...about 10 X 10...and we had no washcloths in the bathroom, which we didn't discover until 3:00 a.m. when we got up to catch the ferry. Our travel agent recommended this hotel and we are going to let him know about it. There was no coffee service either in the room. NOTHING extra whatsoever! We've stayed in 4 star hotels for half the cost and five times the quality and service.

Poor front service desk. Bad employee attitudes;could care less about customer service or satisfaction. Had a very, push-it-on attitude. The restaurant had good food. Small dark rooms and overpriced.

Was in Juneau on a business trip, the location of the hotel is in a perfect location(walking distance from work). The hotel brings an oldtime charm with the restroom reminded me of the 50's. I had a room with ajoining doors, which were paperthin. The guest next to me tv must of been in the doorway because I could hear it as clean as a bell. Along with with hacking cough of the old man. The bed was nice, so were the staff. If driving into downtown isn't an issue for you, I would stay somewere in close to the airport.

This is a great hotel in a wonderful location with a very pleasant and helpful staff. Best pancakes I've ever eaten in their coffee shop.

This hotel diminished my expectations that Alaska hotels would be run down, made of ice and probly smelling like curry. The front desk service took care of our registration before we got to the hotel. The bellman took out bags to our rooms because we got stuck in Seatle due to fog. We slept in the following morning and housekeepers obeyed our do not disturb sign. There is a bar in the lobby area that serves the best mixed drinks I've ver had. The only thing I thought needed improvemnet was the room size. The hotel is the largest in Juneau. In walking distance of everything down town. Good bang for your buck. J. McHealy
