Poop or brownish matter all over the covers.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/30/10
I had gotten to the hotel late and my sister was already there sleeping so I just came in and crawled into bed. The next morning she was going into have surgery so we got up early to find the bed had POOP all over the side of the covers and down the dust ruffle. I was really grossed out!! We then started to look around the room to find on the wall of the bathroom there was more. They said they would clean the room for my next nights stay but when I showed up just the covers had been changed. The poop was still on the ruffle and the wall. He told me that my card wouldn't be charged and it was. Horrible place for a clean person to stay.

Don't stay here - MAJOR Theft Problem
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/28/10
My parents stayed here for 2 nights and departed this morning (6/28/2010). The first night, their truck was broken into in the Double Tree parking garage. The thief used a tool to punch a hole in the lock (didn't break a window, just a one-inch hole by the lock) and stole numerous items, including their GPS, prescription sunglasses, a birthday gift for my nephew, a bag of clothes, books, and their registration & insurance cards. All of these items were locked in the truck's lockbox and out of sight...but they were parked next to the stairwell door on the 3rd floor. Through the investigating police officer, we learned that not only was another car broken into the SAME night (on the 6th floor), but this is at least the 6th or 7th theft in just the past few weeks. The police believe it's the same guy doing it, always with the hole punched in the lock, and the Double Tree is the ONLY HOTEL in the Birmingham area that this has been happening at. There is NO SECURITY - the security camera holders are empty - and when I spoke with the front desk, they told me that guests park at their own risk. But when your hotel has numerous thefts within just a few weeks' timeframe, you'd think they would do SOMETHING to increase security??? Not at the Double Tree. Here is where it gets worse - not only did this happen, but the front desk people were beyond rude. When I was speaking to one woman, she didn't even say "excuse me" but proceeded to answer a phone call while I was talking mid-sentence. Then, this morning, when my parents got their bill, they were charged $10 a night for parking!! (They didn't even park there the 2nd night; we parked their truck at my apartment building.) And when my mother wanted them to amend the bill, the front desk clerk (a different clerk) got snippy with her!! To top it off, the manager wouldn't even come out of her office to speak with my mother this morning to address the incident! She sent the same snippy clerk out, who said "we're following our procedures"...not even one single Double Tree staff member had the decency to apologize to them. Not once. The staff overall was completely RUDE and INSENSITIVE. Yesterday was my parents' 40th wedding anniversary and they spent the majority of the day on the phone with the police, insurance company, and credit bureaus. Their entire day was ruined... The only good thing we can say about the overall visit was that the bed was comfortable. That's it.

Nope. Expensive Holiday Inn
By Robby, 11/11/09
Bums everywhere outside of this place. They managed to make me wait three hours to get a room. Their argument-they had a large amount of people check out after Talladega-My response-Welcome to the wonderful world of running a hotel-hire more people to help clean the rooms. To me this place was just an overpriced Holiday Inn. There is nothing special about it. On my second day here, I waited until 4:00 PM, then when I finally heard housekeeping start to enter rooms near mine, I put the do not disturb sign in the hall. What a joke. I have never seen a hotel so poorly operated. Beyond that, downtown Birmingham is a dump. I don't know why anyone in their right mind would go to a UAB. This is a flagship medical school? Yeah right!

Would Do It Again :)
By CupcakeQueen, 1/13/09
Great proximity to UAB, medical center, & shopping....You can walk just about anywhere. It is a little noisy at night because of the location, but what do you expect at any downtown hotel that is directly located around the corner from a major medical center & university. The rooms were clean. The staff was excellent. The front desk even called after I settled in to ask if I needed anything. Room service was wonderful....The person who delivered my food called after breakfast to make sure everything was to my liking & offered assistance for anything else I may need. All in all, it was a great experience. I would definitely stay here again. Oh and I shouldn't forget ....the complimentary, warm signature DoubleTree cookie is sooooo good!

Never Again!!!
By dixie, 5/26/07
Upon check in we were asked to give a deposit for the room, since we were paying cash. We had given a $30.00 check. Upon check out, they had lost our check. We were delayed in leaving while they looked for it. In the meantime, I requested that we receive a partial refund due to the fact that our tv had not worked the entire time. When asking for air freshner because of the foul odor in the room, we had to ask twice. Upon asking for extra towels, the four of us received two. They ended up giving us the $30.00 back in cash, which I considered to be a refund. I was told that they would shred the check if it was ever found. That did not happen, they sent the check on through. Find somewhere else. Management does not keep their word.

Exactly what we needed!
By Chris, 2/13/07
We were in town to see a concert at one of the local clubs at 5 Points. The hotel was close enough that we were able to walk to the club. Parking was only $5 for the day with unlimited in and out privileges so driving would not have been a hassle either. Our room was very comfortable, clean and quiet. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed a great breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant the next morning with a variety of items to choose from. I will definitely choose this hotel again the next time we are in Birmingham!

Probably not again.....
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/31/05
Located 3 blocks or so from the 'five points' area that has shopping and eateries, but also right next door to the University, this was not a good choice. I had a top floor room with a balcony and all I heard all night was sirens. Police, fire trucks and ambulances ALL NIGHT LONG!!!! The local airport also had departing flights along the direction of the hotel which did not help. It's central location, while good for access does come with the drawbacks of hearing the traffic all night. Lobby and reception was very nice, parking was easy and free, rooms were clean and roomy, and the staff was good. Breakfast was good and fast. If this hotel was in a different location, it would be getting a 4-star rating. Some like the central location and can put up with the traffic noise, but it is not for me. Next time i will probably search for another hotel.

Great Location, worth a stay
By jack, 5/23/05
This hotel is located close to the Univeristy and Medical Center. Rooms are spacious and the lobby bar is cozy. Skip the in hotel restaurant except for breakfast, there are many fine restaurants, bars and clubs located just up the hill.
