Why the complaints?

I've stayed at plenty of Westins all over the world (a platinum SPG member). It's the first time I stayed at the Cancun location. I chose it because it's closest to the airport and I wanted to stay away from the spring break crowd. It's fantastic. It's the first hotel from the airport so transportation is a breeze!
It's right next door to club med so I walked over there all the time (great snorkeling spot). It's not the biggest, fanciest resort or timeshare village with the biggest pools, but it's not crowded either, which I love (I hate it when all those tourist families are hogging everything, plus the teenagers, the spring break college kids... you get my point). It's really not far from everything and the bus rides are interseting (and cheap! Only 40 cents each way). But -- DO get the upgrade to the Royal Beach Club -- the extra large rooms, the free breakfast buffet and happy hour (free food and drinks), and the private beach are well worth it (the meals themselves saved us $50 a day, at least). The mango frozen margaritas were addictive (and free at the happy hour!)
We had a great time. Again, if you're looking for something fancy, huge, crowded, and walk to Wal-Mart and Hard Rock Cafe (i.e. being a complete American tourist) -- it's not for you. But if you want some chillax time, great beach, and friendly service, it's really a great choice.
