Disappointing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/29/10
The cabins have not been maintained at all. Dark, dreary uninviting. The pool was filthy. Hairs, bugs, slimy unknown materials floating in the water. It was a disgusting green color. So dirty we would not get in it in 93degree weather. We felt ripped off and should have been refunded our money. Don't ever go there.

GREAT GETAWAY FOR A FEW DAYS OR STOP OVER ANYTIME
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/11/09
This place is being totally overhauled and updated. Our family has been coming up to the Smoke House for over 20 years, and we've seen alot of changes over this time. Mr Oliver (whom we've met several times on our trips) started the business in 1960 and ran it till his death a couple of years ago, since then the kids have taken over, and they are really making some improvements now. We've stayed in the cabins and rooms over the years and noticed a bit of wear and out dated furniture in the facilities, but this visit we noticed all that is changing. We like the newly remodeled cabins, everything in there has been redone, new leather furniture, new kitchen appliances, old iron bed with new comfortable mattress, new bath fixtures, stacked stone fireplace, new flat screen TV, and they're still working on the outside stuff. The lodge clerks said that they're working on updating all the lodge rooms too. The gift shop is a step back into an old General Store, with old fixtures and antiques, soft drinks in glass bottles, peanuts, homemade fudge, and an old 1920's player piano playing music. Great entertainment. Just recently, Country Music Legends "The Louvin Brothers" put in their museum in the store and the Olivers have started a moonshine museum with video and artifacs of old tools and a moonshine still. The gift shop girl told us that they're building new bathrooms in the store too, so looks like they're working everywhere, but the atmosphere is still old fashioned country spirited, I don't think that will ever change. We enjoyed it all. We love the great BBQ Ribs and Fried Chicken and Catfish, fried green tomatoes, turnip greens and corn bread, and fried pies. We always eat most of our meals here, all are great. The prices are worth what you get for sure. We'll be back and we always reccommend to others.

Not As Described on Internet
By Gwynee, 1/15/09
It was dirty looking and feeling. The toilet didn't work properly and we never got the internet as advertised. We were extremely sorry we paid for this down trodden place and staff said they didn't know about the surrounding area. That was too much for us really. The area is why people go to hike and see the mountains. Bugs in winter were in our room and we had fly swatters so must be many all the time. I would not go back.

Skip this place...
By Scott, 6/30/08
When our family arrived, 17 of us for a family reunion. They did not mention to us about the pool has been closed for 3 weeks. We booked it two weeks ago. All of the outside activies where in bad shape. This was the reason for us to come here. On there web site it mentions, basketball, tennis, volleyball, pond, shuffleboard courts and a gazebo. The basketball goals where broke, Tennis nets where worn out bad. We didn’t even find a shuffleboard court and the gazebo area was over runned by birds. Most of the tables where covered in Bird droppings that have been collecting in a pile for awhile it seems. The Staff was not friendly, and it seems the oldest person working there was only 19 when we tried to get a manager. The beds, where hard as wood and so where the pillows too. We had 5 rooms and all of them where the same. The Rooms have not been remodel in a long time. I would guess 80's was the last time. In all the years we have been doing the Reunions, this was the worst place we have been and will never go back to them. Best Western, really needs to take there name off of it, before they get a bad name.

GREAT PLACE
By sandra, 5/27/08
We stayed in the cabins down behind the hotel. The cabins are very nice with a fireplace and jaccuzzi. The staff were very pleasant and the place was very clean. I definitely plan to stay here again.
