Black and White Service at the Tusk Taung
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/2/08
I am born and bred in Taung. I always visit the Taung tusk, because is my favorite hang-out place, until this weekend (01/Nov/2008).On this particular day, the tusk was hosting a “White” wedding. My partner and I were sitting on the sofas, enjoying our drinks and watching some TV at the bar when the wedding attendees walked in accompanied by a Lady Manager (Renette). My partner went to the bar counter to settle our bill when a huge Afrikaan man walk straight to where I was sitting, He switched off the TV and with a very hostile voice told me “This is a private function, leave”.
What shocked me the most was the behavior of the so-called manager, whom I asked if this was not a public bar, she just looked at me and said these people have reserved/booked the bar as well, afterwards she just continued chatting with one of the attendees. The least she could have done was just to approach us and politely ask us to leave. Clearly there are double standards, when it’s a black wedding and a white wedding, I have attended two black weddings at the tusk and on both occasions, White people were going in and out of the bar.
My partner and I left and later returned in the evening for a night cap. On our arrival I saw the older male manager and the lady manager (Renette) leaving with a lady friend. We sat outside by dinning patio as we did not want to disturb the wedding celebration in the bar. At around 23:34 we asked for the bill and we were asked to pay by the bar, because the dinner was closed. We walked into a very rowdy crowd. And we were approached by a not so sober groom, whom instructed us to cancel whatever order we have placed and to leave immediately, because it is a private function. My partner tried to explain to the drunken groom that we were just settling our bill and yes we were on our way out. At that time the drunk groom was screaming at the bar man and lady and getting aggressive and physical. The frightened bar lady gave us our charge back, and we left the place disgusted and disappointed at the way black people are still been treated in South Africa. Before I left for JHB in the morning I went pass the tusk and asked at what time the party ended and I was told in the morning. And the same tired staff were serving the last night crowd .the staff looked so much exhausted. Whereas the managers went to sleep and left their staff to serve a drunken crowd ,that believes they are above all until the early hours.Shame on the hospitality industry. Taung Tusk service is for the white-Afrikaana.We will never be one nation as long as there are stil managers like this.
