Go in the winter. The mosquitos are almost unbearable in the summer though I have been in the warmer months, survived it, and had a good time
I have stayed at the Flaming Lodge many times over the years. I prefer the cottages. Roomier with a kitchen. The fishing is Awesome. Tarpon can be caught right from shore at the marina late and early. Just outside the pass, within 200 yards of the Marina, Redfish, Trout, Tarpon Mangrove Snapper and Grouper. are plentiful and relatively easy to catch.
On the outside, (Florida Bay), the channels are well marked and the Tarpon, Redfish and Shark fishing is amazing. Soak a dead mullet or ladyfish on the bottom at the mouth of any of the channels on an outgoing tide and you are practically guaranteed a large Tarpon or Huge shark. Or, cast for snook, redfish and trout on the incoming tide.
On the inside the mangroves offer excellent Snook and trout fishing mixed in with the occasional accidental alligator that will seize your catch on the way in. It is a true adventure. Again anchor up in the current in one of the many channels cutting through the mangrove islands and the variety and size of fish is truly surprising while bottom fishing with dead or live bait. A great place for kids and bottom fishing. FIsh the outside on calm days and go inside on the blustery days.
I highly recommend a three or four day stay. Hiring a guide for the first day to famaliarize yourself with the area and fishing techniques is recommended. You should learn enough to then take advantage of your own craft if you tow one down. Or, one of the rentals is a good way to go.
The place is affordable, clean, well managed and policed with a full service marina. I highly recommend it for a rustic adventure and indelable memories.
Stopped there with my family when I was 11 yrs. old. I came back almost 30 yrs. later and found it to be a fishermen's delight. Right before nightfall my friends and I caught tarpon at the marina. It was a blast. I'll never forget Flamingo.
I gave the overall 4 day experience, 5 stars. It totally depends what you're after. To rent a canoe and float with 'gators in the early morning is something we weren't ready for....we will never forget it.
We liked it so much, we're going back for another week in about a week's time.
Again, it depends what you're after, but we found it to be a delight!
