Not a bad place, but will never go here again.
By mike, 10/04/09
We were happy to find this place, since we wanted to be near the shuttle for the Brewer's game. It's a unique place, not a chain. The price was good and the rooms were clean. I put two rooms on my credit card, since we were traveling with another couple. We stayed Monday night, checked out and turned in our keys (metal keys, not the new card kind) and went home, which is three + hours away. Later in the week, we got another bill from them for Tuesday night. I called and the owner/manager said the maid saw me leaving the room on Wednesday morning. I said that's not possible, we left on Tuesday and the four of us were all in one car. I was at work on Wednesday morning at 8:00 AM (I commute and was in Minnesota). I told him that I had a gas receipt from Tuesday when I filled up out of town and that I had neighbors who could vouch that I was back in town on Tuesday . The owner just kept saying I wasn't telling the truth and that the maid said I was there. I can easily get statements from our workplaces proving we weren't in Milwaukee on Wed. morning. The owner said he was going to have to have the lock changed. (He said he remembers me turning in two keys, not sure how I was supposed to have access to the room.) He told me repeatedly, just tell the truth, if I have to call the police it will be a lot worse for you. I said, I wasn't there! He said, I'm going to look at the security tapes. I told him to do it! This conversation took place on a Saturday morning and our whole day was pretty much ruined worrying about this mess. On Sunday a woman called and left a message on our phone. She said she was sorry for the inconvenience and our card was being credited. I called the owner again, to see what had happened and expecting an effusive apology. No dice. He was very cold. He said (wondering if he is lying) that someone DID come out of that room on Wed. morning, but they couldn't tell who it was, so since it was "inconclusive" they can't charge us. I replied that I can honestly say that it was not me and hung up. We were hoping to stay at this place again when going to future Brewer's games. I really don't understand how this man gets any repeat business. He is a very poor business man. I've never been treated so rudely. He implied that I was a liar and a thief. We will never go back here again.

Never stay at this place!!!!!!!!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/17/09
The place is dated, you must purchase shampoo, old fashioned key system, you can NOT make rootbeer floats in the small breakfast area as the owner says you might make a mess,no breakfast,no pool,no ice machine, old bed covers, with children you play baseball catch in the street. At 52 years old this and only one other place are in my top two worst places to stay ever in my life.My uncle was a little ill and called for a late check out and that was another 20 bucks. How welcome is that from the owner. This place is still 80 some bucks a nite or more so thats not really cheap. Ripoff, rude, smelly, old, and it really is 40 STINKS. Some of the front desk help were nice.I would rather pay 125-300 per nite and have something nice otherwise just stay home if this is the last resort.

Terrible reported to Health department
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/25/08
This was a nightmare. I was attending a law enforcement conference at the Hampton (no more rooms), and got back at the(40 Stinks) motel around midnight. As my fiance and I settled into bed, we noticed pubic hairs all over the sheets. Apparently, the bed was made, but the sheets not changed. There was no one in the lobby, so I called the police to see if the owner could be contacted to get us a different room. The police arrived at the same time the owner did. The owner was very polite while the police where there. However, as soon as the officer left, the owner went off on us and told us we trashed his room and accused us of damage to a washcloth. He threw a fit because we had food wrappers in the garbage! My fiance had washed her face, and there was eye shadow on a washcloth. He told us he wanted us to leave NOW and would call around to the other motels to not rent us a room for the night. Total Prick. I waited until I received my credit on my card and then reported him to the health department.

Excellent Value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/02/07
The staff is friendly and helpful. Although the structure and design are somewhat antiquated, it is very clean and shows signs of being recently remodeled. It is very quiet - we didn't hear any other guests - and backs up to a residential neighborhood. The linens (towels and bedspread) are showing some signs of age. However, I slept well and dried off fine. Overall, a very good value if you are planning to be out and about in Milwaukee for most of your stay and don't need a lot of amenities.

Never so disrespected!!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/27/05
Save yourself - DON'T STAY AT THE FORTY WINKS! I have stayed at hundreds of hotels in my life and have NEVER had this kind of horrendous treatment ever before. When the air conditioning in my children's room (they aren't kids, 26 and 31) didn't work, they were accused of breaking it, which they did not do. The desk clerk called the owner at midnight, he came to the hotel screaming, swearing and finger pointing like a crazy man, then called the police (when he was the only one making trouble, even the police will admit to that.) When we checked out the next day - a day earlier then we planned, we were told we would still be charged for the 2nd night, even though we were not staying, and checked out well before the checkout time. I had rented 4 rooms for 2 nights, and will NEVER go there again. I urge you, spend another $10 and save yourself from the aggravation and humiliation!!!!

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/06/05
I enjoyed it a lot! It was just the right price and was the cutest place i've ever been! The rooms were very nice, not too small just right. The pool was very clean and the people were very nice to my family!
