Clean, quiet, affordable, but.....
First let me say all the great things about the Days Inn on Whitaker Rd. We paid just over $80/night for our double-queen room which was very clean. The bathroom was squeaky clean and all the sheets and linens were spotless. There was a coffee maker in the room, although we couldn't find the coffee pot. Maybe you have to ask for it? I'm not sure. Good selection of coffees and tea in the room too. The complimentary breakfast is from 6:30 to 9:30 am and serves a great selection of food, even hot biscuits and gravy! Fresh fruit, juice, coffee, tea, pastries and bagels, yogurt, flavored coffee creamers too. Lots of other goodies. The food and dining area were impeccably clean and comfortable, nicely decorated and even had a TV within view of all the tables with the morning news on.
The hotel location was close to everything you'd want in downtown Portland and only 15 minutes by freeway from the Sleep Country Amphitheatre in Ridgefield, WA. The grounds around the hotel are well maintained and attractive, not a bad area of town either, and sits away from Whitaker Road, so it's even pretty quiet in the parking lot. We used the free hotel shuttle and it came at the drop of a hat to pick us up at the station downtown Portland (thank you, Marcie!). Immediate shuttle service back to the station the next day, too, with no wait and no advance notice or scheduling needed. You only have to schedule the shuttle if you're going to or from the airport.
Now the bad news...and I'm not saying every room is like this, but our particular room smelled HORRID. This wasn't a musty smell or even stale cigarette smell - those I can deal with. This was like a strong cat urine smell. The smell actually permeated the towels hanging by the sink. The room was spotless, so I have no clue where the smell came from. We got in so late and the kids were so exhausted, I didn't go ask to be moved. The beds were very clean, but I had to put my face under the blankets to try not to smell the room when we went to bed. The air conditioner and even opening the window did not help at all. We did hear a "meow" coming from somewhere inside one of the walls and when we mentioned it to a staff member, he said that a guest might have one in their room. But honestly, it sounded like from inside the wall. There were lots of cats hanging around the front entrance too. When I mentioned some of them to a staff member, he said the hotel owned them and fed them. Don't get me wrong, I love cats and own 3 of them, but the smell was really THAT bad in the room, especially by the sink/vanity area, which isn't pleasant when you're brushing your teeth and cleaning up. Hopefully the other rooms don't have that problem, but if yours does, ask to be moved. On the positive side, the room was absolutely quiet and we couldn't hear another guest our entire stay. I'd give 5 stars if our room didn't smell so horrible, because everything else was perfect...so 4 stars it is.
