Not like days of old
By Larry, 07/02/08
I disliked my stay so much that I am writing this 10 months later, while thinking about another outer banks vacation. My family went to Ocean Side Court often in the 80's, under the old management. Things have changed, and that bothers me. What bothered me more, however, is what hasn't changed.
The buildings are essentially the same as I remember. Only now that they are older, they have had another 20 years to accumulate mold and they smell like seaweed (not like a gentle ocean breeze). Floors, counters, and dishes were filthy and looked like they had not been cleaned since the last time I was there. No joke, there were roaches on our bed at night. (It is not fair to use the R word unless it's true, but believe me, it is!!) I gather they feed off the mold that has to be growing in every crevice.
I know the guide says avoid personal attacks, but my comments are directed at the service, as provided by the live-in site managers. So it may sound personal, but I'm only trying to help future travelers. The lady running the place was nice, but her husband provides bad customer service. He got mad at us for all sorts of picky little things, and he wanted to count our 2 month old baby as an extra person, so he could charge more money or something. Believe me dude, she would rather not have been at your hotel. It's quite obvious that the staff has no hotel training, and is there only as a retirement gig.
If staff could keep the place clean and fresh, perhaps I could deal with their disposition. But basically, when you go to Ocean Side Court you can expect the worst of the old and the new. I will go back as soon as new management comes in and the whole place is torn down, rebuilt, and renamed.
