Great Victorian Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/18/07
I found the Chalfonte a great place to stay. It is very quaint and charming with an extrodinary rich history. Dot and Lucille the world renound chefs; really know how to cook and their food was superb. It was done in southern style. I went to the Chalfonte on a work-weekend and loved every minute of it. It truly is a lovely place to stay and it takes you back to a much simpler time. In fact, both my husband and I did not miss our TV, Ipod or cell phone one bit. It was nice to get away from all the electronic gadgets for once. I highly recomend the Chalfonte. It is truly a Grand-Dame of CapeMay.

My overnight stay
By Cat, 8/26/07
First, I agree with other reviewers who have written that this is not a five star hotel. This hotel does have its charms but it is a grand dame in need of more than a fresh coat of paint and the occasional patch up job. A better bed or at least a firmer mattress would have been nice. The common bathrooms could have been kept cleaner. The price is a bit steep. On the plus side, my room was neat and clean. The hotel is located within walking distance of the beach. The staff was friendly and helpful. The porch is wide and the rockers are comfortable Breakfast which is included with the cost of the room was good. Please be warned, if you are a traveler who needs a telephone, television and air conditioner in your room or on-site parking this place is not for you.

Great stay
By Robert, 6/20/07
We stayed one night on our way to DC. It was a great expericece. If you are looking for 5 star, this place is not for you. We loved the kids having dinner in the kids room, while we ate in the main room. We would go back again.

So disappointing....don't waste your money!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/21/05
Our family of 4 ( with 2 daughters ages 7 and 10) went to the Chalfonte for dinner this summer during our vacation in Cape May. We had made a reservation for 6:30pm at 5:30pm that same day. We arrived at 6:25 and waited over an hour to be seated! The room is very hot (no air conditioning). Our waitress was clearly overworked and completely indifferent to our experience there. They only had 1 children's menu entree - chicken fingers, so our 10 year old had a $22 entree, because she doesn't care for them. They only had 3 desserts and by 8pm had run out of 2 of them. Their fried chicked recipe is much touted by them so we were looking forward to trying it only to discover, upon being seated, that they only serve it on Wednesdays and Sundays. It was quite an expensive dinner (over $150 for the four of us) and it was the WORST service I have ever received in a restaurant anywhere... It's a lovely historic hotel...go for a drink or have dessert. Don't waste your money on dinner there like we did.

A Step Back in Time
By Nancy Llewellyn, 8/22/05
I have visited the Chalfonte at least twice a year since 1990 and so I hasten to respond to those who submitted very bad reviews. For the person who is looking for a luxurious hotel with all the amenities, this isn't it, and frankly I am glad of that, as are many people who have visited the Chalfonte each year for far more years than I have. The Chalfonte Hotel has landmark status at Cape May, NJ, the country's oldest seashore resort. It is a hotel which has been carefully "preserved" rather than restored, so once you step inside the door you are experiencing the hotel very much, I think, as it was in Victorian times. It is kept in shape by loving volunteers who each spring and fall return to do a little painting, a little nailing, or whatever needs to be done. Then, there are the architectural students from the universities who have worked on her over the years to earn college credit. It's a very old seaside resort hotel, folks, and it does what it's meant to do - gather folks together for a very happy step back in time. So, for those of you who actually "get" it, you will love this place. And, by the way, it does have wonderful entertainment, excellent dinners at the Magnolia room, and a great bar.
