Good for business
By cosimoc, 10/24/07
I was there on October 2007 while attending a conference at the Beijing Conference Centre... Very convenient, since the it took only a few minutes of taxi to get there... and in a city like Beijing... this is important. The Hotel is perfect and fully at Shangri-la standards, service was excellent, room spotless and food delicious. I was staying in the new wing, which is less lively but surely enjoyable. The week point is that if you need to reach forbidden City or silk market (to buy some presents for family) it takes over 45 minutes of taxi.. or over an hour if in peak traffic hours. overall I would surely recommend this hotel.

The best got better
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/30/05
The best got better, If you are a Shangri-La veteran like me then you will already be fond of the place. The USD22 Million makeover has just added to an already excellent venue. If you need a taxi back to the hotel and your not a local try asking for the Shan Gorilla you're sure to get home!

Life in a Guilded Birdcage
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/11/05
While I wouldn't describe it as the Venetian in Las Vegas(!!??), this is a very fine and well run hotel. The service is attentive, but not stuffy. Many employees were very friendly and eager to please. Cafe Cha had a decadent and wonderful food presention. The bar had a wonderful Chinese "new age" group playing when I was there. The downside is an isolated location...not near any sites, subway or any street life. There is absolutely nowhere to walk around. Closer to the Summer Palace, but that's about it. I stayed at the Palace, which has a great location, but the service and rooms are better here.

Truly Upscale
By Yunfang, 9/8/04
I am impressed when I first arrived the hotel lobby. It's not like a hotel in a developing country. The rooms are luxurious. It's like hotel venetian in Vegas but newer. It cost me $90 per night, which is high considering the living standard of Beijing. But it's by far the best value hotel I have ever stayed(by the US living standard). It also got a big gym and a big pool. Although it might be kind of odd that the next block or two are some really old and dirty streets, it reflects the true color of beijing which is transitioning from the communism to the capitalism. Highly recommeneded for people who are looking for a nice and safe place to stay during their visit to china.
