Avoid Shelly Beach
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/30/11
Do NOT go here without a guide. Do NOT take any valuables with you. If you are white, the place is a deserted beach and has been since 1997 after the riots. Its very dangerous. Myself and two other girls went there as travellers last week and got lifted on the beach. All of our bags got stolen and my friend got held to knifepoint. They see you as soon as you get off the port from Mombassa and plan the attack. Please avoid Shelly Beach. Diani is touristy and safer. Watch out for beach boys too though. Don't take any valuables either.

the People make the place
By Brian M, 9/6/07
I was here for a couple of weeks, and although the place itself is nothing to write home about ... the Staff were all Excellent ... nothing was a problem. If you want something, it gets done almost immediately ... I can't praise the staff too highly ... they made for one of my most memorable Holidays/Vacations ... the place 7 out of 10 ... the people 10 out of 10.

Memorable - for all the wrong reasons
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/19/07
The food was inedible and the comical Management did add some amusement. Sprt of like two schoolboys trying to run a stall at a fete. However, the staff were very pleasant although not well looked after. The beach was a joke. Stretch of beach which couldn;t be used due to the amount of boys/girls selling beads/carvings. If you do go, watch out for the Shelly Belly - it's very well known and extremely unpleasant. make sure you book the more expensive rooms cos you'll be spending an awful lot of time in there (well, the bathroom).....

Ruth & Me
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/9/06
We travelled to Kenya and after travelling about for a week we caught a bus to Mombasa and arrived at 2o/c in the morning. We found a taxi who recommended us to Shelley Beach. We checked in with no difficulties which I thought, considering the hour, was bloody good service. Our room was air-conditioned, clean and with a balcony overlooking the internal gardens. The food and service were excellent, the staff extremely friendly and we had the best holiday ever.

My most memorable holiday ever
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/30/05
My husband and I went to Shelly Beach in January 1999, and have never forgotten what a wonderful place this was, the staff were lovely, the accomodation was a little old but welcoming (although its now had a refurb) We made so many friends on this holiday and we're still in touch with some of them, when I went there, there were only about 40 - 50 of us which made it even more fun. After this holiday we got married in Kenya, as it left a lasting impression on us, although we didn't get married at Shelly Beach, but at The White Sands Hotel, as we couldn't get booked at Shelly Beach at the time, we will certainly be going back to Shelly Beach with our children very soon. Good luck to anyone going to this hotel you will have a wonderful time.

cant wait to take the kids
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/21/05
we had our honeymoon here, and were left in an emotional state by the friendliness of the staff, they could not do enough to help us. We were wary of the locals at first, but got to know many of them soon after, one fellow called "Manchester" took us on many reef walks, and introduced us to his family and friends. now the kids are getting older, we look forward to taking them there, this destination is 10/10 on most counts

50th Birthday surprise for my husband
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/14/05
The hotel had just re-opened following refurbishment when we arrived. The first night there were only a handful of people staying there. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nothing too much trouble. Accommodation and food excellent. Highly recommend this hotel.
