James Bond and Kissinger Cold War Motif!
I just got back from the Ukrania. It's a very 50's style hotel, with some upgrades to the 21st century. The hotel had that cosmopolitan feel, especially with folks from all over the work (Korea, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, German, English, and of course Russian). Just think Sean Connery as 007 in a Russian hotel.
There is security, but it basically is a x-ray machine and a metal detector. There was muscle in the lobby, but they were professionally dressed like businessmen, and never approached anyone. There were no security personnel on the floors (at least I never saw any). There are cameras in every hall. Overall, I felt very safe .
The breakfast is a continental experience in itself. There was fresh fruit, vegetables, pastries, bread, Russian and international foods available. The food changed every half hour, and every time it changed, something new was added. The smoking section is in the back of the breakfast dining area.
There were a few working girls in the bar and restaurant, but they never approached anyone. No one in the group received phone calls, or were approached while there (there were 3 men in the group, all checking in individually).
The rooms had heating, and never got too hot or cold. The bathrooms will take you back at least 50 years with their motif. Theyre clean and have all the amenities one would expect in a first class hotel (and the roughest toilet paper Ive ever felt!). Be careful for the radiator in the bathroom. It can get hot! The bed was soft and comfortable. TV was available, with Italian, French, English (and Russian) channels being free. There were also movie channels and an adult channel. Funny , after about a minute, the channel goes black. However, if you flip channels back and forth, you can watch for another minute. I never got charged for this (and I was into the non-adult movie that was in English, but with Russian subtitles). I think all channels were available for about $10US a day.
Internet service is available in the room via dial-up. You have to go to the phone lady in the lobby to get internet. A down payment of 300rubles should get you going. I think it comes out to ~$8US an hour or so. Never tried the wi-fi in the lobby (Id be surprised if it was there). Skype was a dream to use, and my calls from Moscow to the USA sounded better than my cell phone back home (and remember this was through a dial-up internet connection).
You can arrange a taxi to the airport in the hotel lobby, next to the front desk. As of Oct-2005, it was 1000rubles: 300 deposit, and 700 for the driver.
Ill definitely book in this hotel again. Its near the river. Its across from famous buildings (one is the government building that was getting slammed with tank rounds during the coup in the early-mid 1990s), and its within walking distance to Arbat street.
