Excellent hotel in an ideal location
By Ajay, 2/23/07
The Ukraina Hotel is a great option for those staying in Moscow. The rooms are renovated and in excellent condition. The views are absolutely magnificient. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece and the renovation has ensured that everything has been tastefully restored. The chandelliers, the piano music and the lounges dedicated to various Ukrainian cities add to the charm. The best part is that the hotel is close to the Kiev Railway Station, which is on the Moscow Metro ring line and just a few stops from the city centre. The service is also excellent. Avoid the in-hotel phone service though.

I can't wait to go back
By KatieM, 11/14/06
The people were friendly and helpful. It was very clean and looked beautiful. I also liked that there was a good amount of security in and out of the building.

would never stay here again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/20/06
The room we had was a suite, large but dirty and had not been redone in probable 30 years. The beds were very uncomfortable. The buffet breakfast was awful. Location was too far from anything. Subway was about a 20 minute walk.

yes it is really the best out of the best. Test it yourself! The hotels location is so much wonderful. Besides, the workers there obey you immrdiately, as if they are anxious to serve you. In addition to this, it has cheap prices, wonderful decoration, and lovely food. Thanks

James Bond and Kissinger Cold War Motif!
By Si-Valley User, 11/4/05
I just got back from the Ukrania. It's a very 50's style hotel, with some upgrades to the 21st century. The hotel had that cosmopolitan feel, especially with folks from all over the work (Korea, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, German, English, and of course Russian). Just think Sean Connery as 007 in a Russian hotel. There is security, but it basically is a x-ray machine and a metal detector. There was muscle in the lobby, but they were professionally dressed like businessmen, and never approached anyone. There were no security personnel on the floors (at least I never saw any). There are cameras in every hall. Overall, I felt very safe . The breakfast is a continental experience in itself. There was fresh fruit, vegetables, pastries, bread, Russian and international foods available. The food changed every half hour, and every time it changed, something new was added. The smoking section is in the back of the breakfast dining area. There were a few working girls in the bar and restaurant, but they never approached anyone. No one in the group received phone calls, or were approached while there (there were 3 men in the group, all checking in individually). The rooms had heating, and never got too hot or cold. The bathrooms will take you back at least 50 years with their motif. They’re clean and have all the amenities one would expect in a first class hotel (and the roughest toilet paper I’ve ever felt!). Be careful for the radiator in the bathroom. It can get hot! The bed was soft and comfortable. TV was available, with Italian, French, English (and Russian) channels being free. There were also movie channels and an adult channel. Funny , after about a minute, the channel goes black. However, if you flip channels back and forth, you can watch for another minute. I never got charged for this (and I was into the non-adult movie that was in English, but with Russian subtitles). I think all channels were available for about $10US a day. Internet service is available in the room via dial-up. You have to go to the “phone lady” in the lobby to get internet. A down payment of 300rubles should get you going. I think it comes out to ~$8US an hour or so. Never tried the wi-fi in the lobby (I’d be surprised if it was there). Skype was a dream to use, and my calls from Moscow to the USA sounded better than my cell phone back home (and remember this was through a dial-up internet connection). You can arrange a taxi to the airport in the hotel lobby, next to the front desk. As of Oct-2005, it was 1000rubles: 300 deposit, and 700 for the driver. I’ll definitely book in this hotel again. It’s near the river. It’s across from famous buildings (one is the government building that was getting slammed with tank rounds during the coup in the early-mid 1990’s), and it’s within walking distance to Arbat street.

Great Location - Watch The Taxi's
By Shane S, 10/27/05
Firstly.... $75.00 is NOT accurate. Just as in many other countries.. there is a distinct difference between the prices foreigners and native's pay.. the same is true at the Ukraina. My Russian friends reserved the room for $100 and when we checked in and they asked me for ID... the price jumped to $160. After trying my luck at several better hotels in Moscow... it turned out to be one of the better hotel values in this overpriced city. Mind you.. I heeded the words of my friends and splurged on a mini suite. The extra $35/night is well worth it... a great King sized bed... huge livingroom and refrigerator. The building and the restaurants are fun... one of the twin towers that dot the city.. it's easy to find... and fairly close to the center. Again I must state that the suites or junior suites are the way to go... the standard rooms showing the wear and tear of years of non-renovation. One last note is never to take a taxi from the lobby of the hotel. The will ask for up to 1200 rubles for your trip. A taxi in Moscow should never cost more than 300 rubles anywhere in the main city area. Walk out the doors and to the right. to the main street on the east side of the hotel.. throw your hand out.. and you can get anywhere in the city for 300. All the best, Ender Oh.. and there is wifi in the bar.

We enjoyed it
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/14/05
We stayed at the Ukraina in May 2005 - we had a renovated room on the 15th floor. It was modern, clean and had a fanstastic view for $137 US night (includes buffet breakfast and taxes). We would stay there again. Beautiful architecture - this is a "Russian-style large hotel"...pretty location. Front desk staff spoke some English. Nice gift shops, great business centre with computers to send email, etc. Across the street is MacDonalds, grocery store, pizza places nearby. About a 15 minute walk to the tourist area Old Arbat (lots of restaurants, better grocery store) and 30 minute walk to Red Square. We caught a taxi to Red Square for about $15 US.

Lots of character, nice location
By doodlebug, 6/24/05
We were part of a group at this hotel, but it was a very comfortable hotel for a 3 or 4 star hotel, and had a LOT of character. It has a very beautiful old Soviet style mural in the center lobby ceiling that should be noticed. It is about 3/4 of a mile from Old Arbat and the Metro and right on the trolly line. Not far from the Kremlin. Only one metro stop from Red Square and two from the Bolshoi. Overall, a very good tourist type hotel. The buffet has a good selection. Rooms are adequate for european standards, but Russian standard is two twin beds either separate or pushed together. No wonder their birth rate is down. LOL.

Great deal and classic building with character!"
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/5/04
Although I was not so lucky to get a renovated room, I would have to say that for the wholesale rates that I managed, this was a very comfortable and enjoyable place to stay. The room had clean comfortable furnishings and beds and a nice high classically molded ceiling. The staff was friendlier than I had expected and spoke English well. What really impressed me was the included breakfast buffet which was in two grand halls and had the largest assortment of good food that I had seen compared to any other hotel buffet. All of the public marble floored rooms were elegant and well maintained (though the corridors to the rooms had a weary, Barton Fink look to them, only wider) and, yes, they did have a lot of security (a monitor on each floor and around 3 men watching the entry). I suppose the amusing thing was that they seemed more eager to check up on registrations of any female guests to prevent unregulated in-room entertainment, yet every evening there were always four or more obvious working girls at the bar with comparatively unfettered access to the place. It did add character to the hotel to see them awake from a nap at 3 am and carry on a game of cards. Other comments, The Art Club restaurant served excellent traditional Russian dishes, had a lot of charm and excellent service, and the business center was easy for emailing with the help of their friendly staff. In all, this is a great hotel for its price, amenities, and character and I would certainly stay there again.
