Unacceptable!
By Amy, 2/13/12
My boyfriend and I thought a romantic getaway would be fun at Edgefield. Not only not but completely ruined. We had to leave the hotel at 1:30am because our hallway was so loud with inconsiderate drunks. Falling up the stairs, down the stairs, calling to one another from down the hall, laughing and generally having a big party.. Which is fine if they were in a college frat house! This is an upscale historic lodge, but sure felt more like a frat house to us. Complete with drunk girls doing handstands in the ladies lounge, which was the "shared" bathroom for overnight guests and everyone else. Dirty washcloths on sink, robe on floor next to shower and toilet paper strung through bathroom. Our complaints fell upon deaf ears, the staff's atttiude was "well this is Edgefield and what happens when you mix alcohol and young people", instead of offering apology/compensation for our inconvience. Combine this with poor service, mediocre food, high prices and weak drinks, hmmmm... not sure how they stay in busines.

Worst Experience Ever
By Emily, 4/4/10
We went there for my aunt's wedding and everybody except us got a bathroom. Our room was super small, the waiter forgot to put our orders in for dinner, and the bathroom that we had to use was far away from our room. The worst thing is that in front of our window was the Administrator's House that is supposed to be "haunted". It was the worst hotel experience I've ever had. Never want to go there again.

Not satisfied enough this time(Edgefield)
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/2/10
We have always enjoyed the concept of how McMenamins runs their establishments however, this time we were not satisfied enough. This was our first time to stay overnight at a location. Being New Years the Black Rabbit package sounded perfect and very festive. Well, our room was super small. The size of large closet with no T.V or phone. The ballroom is not a ballroom. Its a medium size meeting mtg style room. The Breakfast club bands music was highly distorted in sound. We had dinner reservations prior at 7:30pm but had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. Then the service was very slow. Salads came before our glass of wine. Waiter did not come around but rarely. Expected to be out in an hour and it took TWO HOURS. The Ribeye steak had more fat on it than meat. Everytime we ate anywhere there the service was slow and the waiters could not get our orders right. It was a big let down really. Its a nice older place with interesting art. But it seems more set up for drinking and having very long boring sit down dinners. At least my boyfriend and I had eachother to make the best of it. I highly doubt we will go back. With no bathroom in our rooms it just isnt worth the price they charge. Breakfast was good in the Black Rabbit Restaurant the next morning though. I recommend the Boxcar breakfast. Do NOT go here if you like to have a cigarrette with your cocktails. They do not have a place anywhere to stand covered. We had to stand in the rain the few with did have. Just not an enjoyable enough time for the $350 we paid for the New Years package and one extra night. I think it was only worth $150 for the package and maybe an extra $70 for the next night. The morning we left I had grabbed a cup of coffee in the lobby and it realized it was old and aweful. Felt much better leaving than we felt staying there. Very unfortunate and a big let down over all.

Love McMenamins!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/11/08
I've stayed at several of the McMenamins hotels...if you didn't know there were more check them out...and they are so fun. Same price (or cheaper) for a hotel with way more character. Leary of the europen style rooms? Don't be! The community bathrooms are very clean and convenient. I've taken my mom and friends, they loved them too!

Great Spot for Boomers to Marry Off Their Children!
By Bob, 5/9/08
If you wore bell-bottoms at college in the '60s, this poor-farm-cum-resort will take you back to those coffeehouses festooned with high-quality psychedelic art. It's everywhere--on the walls, on the pipes, hanging in frames. All of this decoration has the history of the farm as a theme, but interspersed among surrealistic murals showing memorable moments you will be surprised to spot a Hindu deity playing a bagpipe, a long-haired woman walking naked in a field, a black rabbit in overalls washing dishes, and all sorts of marvelous and imaginative motifs. We were there for four days surrounding our son's wedding. The atmosphere was unabatedly festive, with three other wedding parties there with us. Semi-antique furniture and carpets lent the accommodations a very comfortable air. There are plenty of quiet places to sit and read indoors and out, and porch rockers where one can mingle with the guests. The beer is excellent and the food very good. Only one negative: wait staff in the main restaurant [The Black Rabbit] was generally slow and clueless when it came to patrons' needs.

Gorgeous & relaxing, but haunted.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/12/07
I loved this place, it's beyond gorgeous - infact I love all Mcmenamins hotels, always have since my first stay at the Hotel Oregon - they remind me of the simplicity, and relaxing feel of quaint European hotels - just LOVE them! And this 2-day stay was absolutely delightful (minus a mess-up with them forgetting to add one of the "add-on romance packages" to our room which we ordered in advance, and which was meant to be a surprise). However, we stayed in the downstairs wing just off of one of the restaurants and above the winery - and as soon as we arrived and entered our room (actually, as soon as we turned down the hall) I instantly felt *weird* - didn't totally know why, other than it all just felt off and kinda sad & creepy - throughout the night the feeling just got stronger and ultimately I decided it was probably, more than likely, haunted - it really just "felt" haunted - plus, we had a loud weird bang on our door late at night, when I looked there was nothing/no one there, also there was always a bizarre feeling something or someone was always watching (I even turned around several times thinking someone was right there), etc. - and of course, out of curiosity, I "googled" Edgefield when I was home after our stay and sure enough, a load of people all over the place saying the exact same thing - some worse with actual encounters and solid experiences! Crazy! (I knew it!) Anyways, just letting you know, in case this sort of thing turns you off (or freaks you out, like it does me) - if you're into this kinda thing, however, you will absolutely LOVE it! Check out online stories re: actual ghostly experiences at the property before you go! ;-)

The BEST in the west!
By Don and Jessie, 7/28/06
The Edgefield is heaven on earth for those who like beer, like wine, like to drink, like movies, like good food and like a the most bang for your buck. I stayed there in a queen bedroom without a bathroom and didn't miss the bathroom! Why? Because the bathroom area is more like a bathroom wing. There are several individual bathrooms with their own shower, baths, toilets and sinks. In fact, I never say anyone other than my husband in that wing! I like the fact that you get your own bathrobe. For $60 or $70 a night, where else are you going to get that sort of amenity? The people who work there are wonderful! The Jack Rabbit homemade cinnamon rolls were to DIE FOR! You really can't go wrong. I've stayed at Parrot Cay an island resort off of Turks and Caicos and for the price, this is a tremendous deal! Can say enough about McMenamins.... I just love it there!

My favorite place to get away!!!
By Jill, 10/7/05
I love everything about this get-away. Not far from Portland, but it has a feel of being out in the country. I tell everyone about all the fun and exciting things to do at Edgefields.
