Description

Iron bars on windows, 30 inch thick stone walls, and a heavy steel door slamming behind you may not sound like the typical tourist accommodation and Jailers Inn is anything but typical. The historic Jailers Inn, circa 1819, offers a unique and luxurious way to 'do time.' Jailers Inn is a place of wonderful, thought provoking contrasts. Each of our six guest rooms are beautifully decorated with antiques and heirlooms, all located in the renovated front jail. The back jail, built in 1874, is basically unchanged; you get a chilling and sobering look at what conditions were like in the old Nelson County jail that was in full operation as recently as 1987. On spring and summer mornings, as you sip hot coffee and chat with other guests over a full breakfast in the courtyard, its difficult to imagine all of the previous uses of the courtyardas a work yard for prisoners crushing limestone, a place to visit forlorn relatives, or even the centralized location of the Nelson County gallows. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rooms All with private baths, two with double Jacuzzis The Victorian Room is filled with antiques and special touches such as an old wardrobe and dresser that belonged to my great-grandparents, the room has pink, floral wall coverings with an array of lace surrounding the chamber. The Colonial Room has a rustic feeling throughout it, from the natural limestone wall to its massive, hand-hewn timbers that run across the ceiling. This room, with all its beautiful furnishings, also contains a double jaccuzzi. The Library Room is done in an Art-deco style and has many older books (hence the name), and it includes a king size bed and sofa, perfect for reading some of those antique books. The Garden Room is many peoples favorite room due to its light and airy feeling when you first see it. With its floral prints, white wicker furniture, and two beautifully hand-stitched bedspreads, it is no wonder that people are drawn to it; include the old-fashioned claw foot bathtub and youll have a room to remember. The 1819 Room is the room with the most contrast, from the hand hewn timbers along the walls and the ceiling, to the shear fabric draperies over the queen size bed. This chamber, until recently, was called the ' Upstairs Dungeon' but, not to worry, the room is protected by the cherubs displayed throughout it. This room also contains a double Jacuzzi to soak your troubled spirits. In remodeling this room we wanted to make it comfortable for you yet keep the ambiance of the past. The Jail Cell also known as the 'fun room' is the only one that still resembles a cell. The room is decorated in all black and white. It houses two of the original bunks and a waterbed. While being incarcerated here enjoy yourself with a poster of Elvis doing 'Jailhouse Rocks,' snuggle up with a James Dean pillow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amenities Full Breakfast (served in the courtyard in summertime) Private baths (two rooms with double Jacuzzis) Turn down service Complimentary tour through the historic Jail Off-street parking -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- History The Old Nelson County Jail property, housed prisoners from 1797 till 1987. The front building, sometimes referred to as the 'Old Jail' was constructed in 1819. Records indicated that John Rogers architect of St. Joseph Cathedral, performed certain carpentry on this structure. The upper floor of this native limestone building, with 30 inch thick walls, contained two cells and an 'upstairs dungeon' to house prisoners. The back stone building, sometimes referred to as the 'New Jail,' was built in 1874 and is completely surrounded by a stone wall. The front jail was then; made into the jailers residence. Both the jail and jailers residence were used and occupied until 1987. It was the oldest operating jail complex in the state of Kentucky and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Do it.
The owner, Paul, greeted us at the drive, took our bags to the Colonial room, through a small foyer with piano, and made us feel right at home immediately. We loved the heavy timber ceiling and one heavy stone wall (with bars on the window) and the not-modern but adequate two person jacuzzi tub. Lots of homey touches in this softly lit room. Not perfect, but perfect. Cozy bath robes and slippers were ready in the closet and a coffee pot ready to start in the hallway. Homemade oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies nearby was a nice touch. The bathroom was rather small with no place to hang robes and towels. The jail tour was stark but interesting. The very cute outdoor patio where we breakfasted was a little chilly that morning, but Maggie the cat was warm and Paul was gracious, preparing french toast with peaches, juice and coffee. Parking several hundred feet behind the hotel near the cemetery was a bit odd. No ghosts though. The Talbot Tavern next door was quaint and the pot roast was good; nothing special. The Civil War Musuem and Old KY Home stops in town were worth the time and price. I would stay there again in a minute. I would recommend one of the larger rooms, though. Worth the few extra bucks

Didn't sleep but had a blast
By ,
We stayed in the Jailhouse rock room. It was comfortable but my wife and kids got spooked and kept the tv on all night! Breakfast was very very good and Lisa the hostess was simply the best. She know all the local things to do and see and was very helpful. I am looking forward to my next visit. The Talbot Tavern next door was a disapointment (they were out of ketchup, go figure) so eat somewhere else.

Disappointed
By ,
Unique. Enjoyed the history and people we met. Could have been cleaner and needs to be refurbished. The small kitchen where food was prepared was very untidy and unsanitary. Coffee only offered in the morning.Breakfast was mostly sweets and fruit. The atmosphere did not match the cost.

Great Inn!
By ,
I picked Jailer's Inn because of the raves I heard from my friends. The Inn was better than I expected. The entire house is spectacular, the innkeeper was wonderful in every way. I felt totally relaxed and pampered the whole time I was enjoying this great place. The people I met were just as impressed as I was with our accomodations. After staying here, I can't imagine staying at another hotel again!

JAILER INN LIVING UP TO IT'S REPUTATION
By ,
we stayed at the jailers inn 02/07 as we had done our homework on different locations that are reported or listed as haunted, we had seen the jailers in on most haunted places on the travel channel in late 2006 and had added it to our list to vist and try and find out first hand if the jailer inn is truly haunted. Upon arriving at the inn we were met by the owner who gave us a tour of the building giving us alot of information on it's history later that evening we began setting up our equiptment for the night including the back part of the building(the old jail with night vision camera and also on the 2nd floor we also used digital recorders placed throughout the areas also. This inn truly stood up to the word haunted we had caught multiple evp's, as well as multiple picture of manifestations of at least 1 man and one women from hearing the history it was probably the jailer wife who use to tend to the prisoner while they were there. we truly enjoyed the 2 day trip and are looking foward to returning this fall for another adventure. The rooms are tastefully done and very clean the breakfast was also good. If you are looking for a nice inn and possibly a few haunts the jailer inn is reccommended by us! northern ky ghost hunters

We will be back.
By ,
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Originally planned to stay one night, but extended to two and made plans to return during Bourbon Fest in September if a room becomes available. The innkeeper made our visit truly outstanding and memorable. The tour of the jail added to the value and unique quality of this inn. Maggie, the cat, also made our stay more homey because we miss our own cats when we travel. The location was prime--no need to drive around to see other things unless we wanted to go out of town a ways to the distilleries and such. We would definitely recommend this inn to all who enjoy meeting delightful people.
