I reserved a room on-line three days before my stay, and got a confirmation that the room was in my name and that I would be charged for the room if I didn't cancel within 48 hours. No worries, since I didn't intend to cancel. I finished a backpacking trip around dusk on the evening of my stay, and began the two hour drive to the Budget Host at 9:00. At 10:00 I got into cell phone coverage, and I had a message from the Budget Host night manager telling me to call if I still wanted my room???!!?? I called the number he left, and no one answered. Around 11:00 pm (on a Friday night) I arrived at the Budget Host Cortez, and the office was locked, no buzzer or information on how to contact the manager. I again called the number that the manager had left, and the phone in the office was ringing, but since no one was there to answer it, I just stood there in the dark trying to figure out how to get the room that I'd reserved. After about 30 minutes of searching the property trying to find anyone in charge (there were several groups of guests hanging out in the parking lot drinking, but no one knew how to get a hold of management since the room phones just called the office), I was forced to accept that the Budget Host was not honoring my room reservation, and, perhaps worse, there was NO ONE there managing the property on a Friday night, with folks getting drunk in the parking lot. It is clear that the night manager had plans on a Friday night and had SHUT DOWN early, closing the office and stranding me (and possibly other guests??) without a place to stay. If you are looking for a place to stay while you take your family to Mesa Verde or to the other beautiful spots in the Four Corners, do NOT stay at the Budget Host in Cortez-- it is clearly NOT a safe environment for a family, nor could you go to sleep confident in the knowledge that a responsible party would be on hand to assist you should some sort of need or emergency arise.
The following day I went to the Budget Host to make sure that I had not been charged for the room. The manager on duty was the same person who had been on duty the night before (Tom)-- he did NOT apologize for disregarding my reservation, nor would he give me the name of his supervisor or the property owner so that I could follow up with them. In fact, as I asked him further questions about the Budget Host reservation policies and tried to get an explanation as to why he wasn't going to give me a way to contact his supervisors, he CALLED THE SHERIFF BECAUSE I WOULDN"T JUST LEAVE THE OFFICE WITH MY QUESTIONS UNANSWERED!!!!!!
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!
I made reservations by phone, when I checked in the clerk at first tried to give me a room without microwave as I had requested but did after I told her what I had ordered she did. Two mornings no ice in ice machine to fill my water bottle. First morning I told clerk. Next a.m. I couldn't as office was not open at 6 and did not serve continental breakfast at 6:30 We went to Denny's as did other s. Looking across others tried until after 7. Otherwise it was large and clean room.
This is a nice clean motel with a friendly and helpful staff. They let us know about nightly indian dancing at the Cortez cultural center and some great suggestions for dinner at local restaurants. Nice Continental breakfast that is quick and easy.
Perfect pool for kids- only 5 foot so no diving. Clean and safe. Nice spa as well.
We had a room with a small refrigerator that worked great to hold snacks and make lunches for the next day out.
Close to everything- minutes to Mesa Verde, Cortez Center, Anasazi Heritage Center, huge lake in Dolores, Hovenweepa and anything else you might want to see in the area.
Great prices at least half the cost of Durango and nicer area with less traffic, easy parking great food.
Perfect place for families with small kids and small budgets. we would stay here again without a second thought- we had a fantastic time in Cortez and we really appreciated the value and friendly atmosphere.
I recently stayed at the Budget Host Inn, what an experience! First of all when we checked in the person checking us in took forever. After a long trip who wants to stand in a lobby for 20 minutes waiting to get into a room? The room was not what was expected either. I was told I would be in a room that was non-smoking. When I got into the room, it smelled like a pub. One of the main reasons we chose this place was because of the advertisment of their hot tub. Only after we checked in did we find out that the hot tub was not inservice. To make things better, when we decided to find another motel with a hot tub, the giant lady at the front desk told me that she would not give me my money back. So we were stuck. We will NEVER stay in this motel again. When a motel advertises ammenities it should provide the ammenities. or at least accomodate the guest when they do not get what they expect.
We chose the hotel from the sign out front and were pleasantly surprised by the friendly attitude of the staff, comfort of our room, and the convienience of the location. All of our needs were met and we would stay here again.
I loved the Budget Host Inn because it was so close to everything (Wal Mart, Mesa Verde) and the people were so helpful. We had a lovely vacation in Cortez. The price-value relationship is excellent. The rooms were very clean, and if you wouldn't know it was a motel, it could probably be a hotel.
