Nice Inn - super clean and quiet
By BarHarborLover, 07/06/09
Nice inn that is super clean, on a side street that is relatively quiet and walking distance to everything. Beds (we have stayed here twice) were comfortable.

Gracious Hospitality
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/04/08
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome. We had a very pleasant stay in The Garden Room. Breakfast was colorful with a nice variety to choose from. The inn is well located and an easy walk to the village. We would stay again and recommend it to others.

Will never go back!!!
My husband and I stayed at the Castlemaine Inn for two nights last week. The mattress was as hard as concrete; therefore we got no sleep. And for the price, we only got one small bar of soap and no body lotion. Way too expensive for what you get. Also, we emailed the innkeepers about our stay and got no response. Very rude indeed!

Very enjoyable!
By Andrea, 09/21/07
Castlemaine has a great location in that is off of a quiet side street but is close to the downtown and restaurants so that you can walk everywhere. Additionally, there was adequate parking, the only way I would rate location higher is if it had been on the water. The entire place was very clean and the room was spacious and comfortable. We got a room with a remodled bath, big enough for two and wonderful to soak in after a day of hiking and biking. The staff was friendly and helpful in choosing places to dine as well as making reservations for you if necessary. The breakfast was good and left me feeling full, however it did not have hot items such as pancakes, waffles, etc. that some places have. The room had a very romantic feel, it was a perfect place for our romantic vacation! I did not have any problems with a few rules being posted, above the tub are a few small things written mostly about how to properly care for the tub such as filling the tub over the level of the jets before turning them on. I never felt like staff was watching you, rather that they were happy to offer their services if you wanted them. I think that for this price range you can't find a nicer place to stay, I would definitely return!

We'll be back
By Betsy, 10/24/06
This was our first visit and we were awestruck with the cleanliness of the hotel. I understand why some reviewers on various sites were put off by the brusqueness but I suppose all the rules are what keeps the place so tidy and pleasant. I think the only negatives were that the Inn's movie collection was not available for loan - the movies were available for rent. The only other negative was that we left at 4AM the morning we left and were not permitted to use the microwave to make a cup of instant coffee before we left. Finding coffee on a Sunday at that time was difficult. Now that that's out of the way, the rooms were immaculate and well-appointed. Pat was friendly as can be and such a delight. Menus for various restaurants were available, which helped. Free passes to the Abbe museum were provided, too. Breakfast was the same, which may not have been a good thing after more than 3 days but maybe the menu changes. The blueberry muffins and scones were exquisite, as well as the homemade granola. Mmmm! We will be back.

Exceptionally clean, sterile
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/04/06
Positives: All the rooms are spotless, and the location is only a short walk from all the cafes and restaurants in Bar Harbor. Negatives: breakfast room tables and chairs are very wobbly and cheap. Breakfast food is mediocre: small (Maine) blueberries, dry scones, edible cakes, cereal, fruit mix, hard boiled eggs dyed easter style (why do they dye them?), and sliced cheese. I would have preferred something heartier, e.g. a tray of bacon and scrambled eggs, or waffles, or pancakes. Only one type of juice (orange) is offered. Cream is provided, but would have liked to see skim/2% etc milk. Coffee is average. However, coffee/tea cup and saucer collection is quite nice (each one is unique!). Cleaning staff has bad habit of leaving all windows in room open after cleaning, no matter how cold it is outside. If the windows were closed by the guest, keep them closed! Overall: this place is not a B&B, but rather a super-clean hotel. There's too many guests for the usual B&B intimacy, and the staff consists of hired professionals, not the owner of the place, and don't have enough quirks or personality.

beautiful, clean, and convenient
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/02/06
While I was expecting a traditional "B&B" experience, I found myself more than pleasantly surprised with the synthesis of convenience and quaintness. The place is spotless. The amenities are modern but not obtrusive enough to remind my otherwise hectic life. The food is a desired alternative from a typical heavy fried breakfast served by many other B&Bs; it's continental breakfast with class, fresh and filling. The building is incredibly well maintained for an authentic piece of 19th century architecture that was apparently a summer home to the austro-hungarian ambassador. The location is ideal, walking distance to the center of town, but quiet. I highly recomend the Castlemaine Inn to anyone visting Bar Harbor.

CASTLEMAINE
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/11/06
ROOMS WERE BEAUTIFUL,BUT THE INN KEEPER WAS AWFUL! MY HUSBAND AND I FELT WE WERE BEING WATCHED EVERY SECOND LIKE CHILDREN. THERE WERE RULES POSTED EVERYWHERE YOU LOOKED. FOR EXAMPLE; DON'T RUN THE WHIRLPOOL TUB AFTER 9:00, ONLY USE FIREPLACE IF IT'S NOT WINDY, DON'T TAKE FOOD INTO YOUR ROOM,ETC. WE WERE ON OUR HONEYMOON AND BECAUSE OF THE INN KEEPER AND ALL THE "RULES" OUR STAY AT CASTLEMAINE WAS VERY UNPLEASANT. I MUST SAY WE LOVED BAR HARBOR AND ARE RETURNING THIS YEAR FOR OUR ANNIVERSARY JUST NOT AT CASTLEMAINE.

Romantic, convenient in-town, great rates.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/11/06
The hostess was very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. The breakfast was delicious and of all baked goods made from scratch and fresh fruit. The husband rakes the blueberries from his own organic fields. We found the in town location very convenient.
