Description

The Gershwin Hotel/Hostel offers a very appealing deal for travelers on a tight budget.Located in the trendy Flatiron district of Manhattan, just around the corner from King Kong's famous Empire State Building, the Gershwin is the preferred address for the creative, international traveler. The hotel succeeds at being a place for artists and art-lovers, and the lobby is a work of art in itself. Narrow, with red and black chequered linoleum, the space is livened up by large 'pop art' pieces, sculptures, and smaller works by Lichtenstein and Warhol. The Gershwin is not just another Big Apple hotel - it is one of the newest 'New York Experiences'. The hotel includes an art gallery exhibiting up and coming artists and 'The Living Room' features progressive jazz performances and comedy acts. The large 10-bedded rooms and shared bathroom have a retro colour scheme. They have greenish carpeting and mural-painted walls. Rooms are serviced daily.Off the lobby is a coffee shop which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner where guests can also check their email at any time. The hostel also features an exceptional rooftop for sun worshipping in summer months. Our 4 bedded accommodations is co-ed and have 2 bunk beds and a shared bathroom. No towels, no TV, no locker, no phone. Safe is available to rent at $5.00 for the stay. One reservation is needed per person and per bed. 18 year of age and under is not permitted to accommodate in our bunker rooms. The Gershwin is just steps away from shopping along Fifth Avenue as well as many of the city's unique restaurants, bars and clubs. It attracts an eclectic mix of young artists, European students, bargain-hunting tourists and business travellers. PLEASE NOTE THAT RATE IS EXCLUDED OF TAXES. New York's 14.75% sales and occupancy tax will be asked to be paid at the hotel. You must be at least 18 years of age to check into the Gershwin Hotel.

Great Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/4/11
It was a great hotel, I stayed there a few nights. I paid for most of it with a free gift card that I got from ESPN. I think they're still giving them out at nflgiftcards.info, hurry before they run out!

Never ever choose this place for your stay in NY!
By Tiia, 7/7/10
This "(h)otel" does not reach the defenition of a hotel in my opinion. I have travelled a lot in my life and I have never been this disappointed for my choice of a hotel. First of all, the photographer, who has taken pictures to the website, must have gotten awards. The room was not as it was pictured. Nothing like in the pics. No refridgerator and no working shower at any time of the day, not to mention the elecricity work in the hallways -all cords showing..!? Those would so not get the EU-proven sign, if we were in Europe. Above all these disappointments, the staff could not have be worse... When entering the hotel, no one looked at you nor said hello. Yet they did change our stay in the hotel even though we had paid it in advance to the agency, from where we bought a packet with plain tickets & hotel. Please, save yourselves and do not stay here!!

very good value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/21/08
Good location, clean room, bed was comfortable, and the hotel felt very safe. (there was quite a bit of street noise in my room.) I would definitely recommend the Gershwin for anyone looking for a budget hotel in a great location.

Top 10 Reasons to NOT Stay at This Hotel EVER:
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/7/08
10. Mattress was lumpy, sheets were like sandpaper (albeit clean). 9. No control over room temperature and window was sealed shut. 8. "Rooftop terrace," although advertised, was not open and was not even close to being open. 7. Room was bleak, depressing, & devoid of decoration. Online pics do not resemble reality. 6. Lobby smells like cheap cab incense. So did all of our clothes by the end of the week. 5. Grouchy, unprofessional staff (except for housekeepers, who were nice). 4. Shower did not work properly at any given time of day for the entire week of our stay. Water was freezing or scalding. We nearly missed two meetings due to waiting for help with this. 3. $250/night for a double bed, plus $35 for internet access. 2. $250/night. 1. They have a signed soup can in the lobby, which apparently is meant as a substitute for warm water, helpful service, and a comfortable place to sleep.

Fine place for Students
By Mikkel, 9/2/06
Some of the art and the sex museum next door will probably put off your typical puritan American - but so much the better in my book. We stayed in the dorm rooms which were fine for the price, everything worked to a reasonable degree. The hotel has an excellent location, right next to Madison Square Park and 5th Ave. Welcome news is the fact that the club mentioned by many earlier reviewers is no longer open for business so nights were as quiet as the could be in New York. Recommended.

What about the basics?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/24/06
If you can get beyond the wait times for the elevators, or that neither cell phone, nor blackberry signals got through. Even if you can get beyond the tiny bathrooms with the shower that drips all night, and the lousy mattresses, it is inexcusable that the TVs didn't get network reception. Kind of hard to watch the news to get the weather for the next day, or to decompress after a long day

cheap and clean, but frill-free
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/17/06
This hotel was cheap and clean, but it was very odd. If you like the type of modern art that you look at and go "hmmmm" and are still trying to understand when you return home, this is the place for you. The furniture and bedding were old, but clean. It was next door to the Museum of Sex and the facade of the hotel had large lighted "horns" that stuck out so it was easy to see from any side street. Again, it was clean and a good value as well as convenient to everything else, but do not expect any modern amenities. No restaurant, bathtub (shower only), only one working elevator, no bar, etc. The heat worked very well, almost too well, but the maintenance person quickly came up to our room to check the radiator and turn it off for us. We slept without it on during the blizzard last weekend. In all, if you are looking for a cheap no frills place that is clean, this would be a good place for you. If you are used to coffee in the room and room service or anything extra, try somewhere else.

Great City - Adequate Hotel
By James, 1/8/06
Very strange place, but not bad, just strange. The room i stayed in was very basic, four single beds, an en suite and TV. Service was adequate, but positioning, not so, every morning we had to walk several blocks, sometimes upto 9 or 10, or more to get to our destinations, then back again. And every day we had to walk past the sex museum next door. That was horrible!! Walking into the city, was sometimes quite intimidating, and during the winter, it is FREEZING!!! The attractions, well, they are just amazing. Even if you have to endure the bad weather, accomadation and location, you still have to go to visit places like the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero & Times Square. Although the hotel is not five star it's a good hotel if you are just requiring overnight accomodation like us. OTEL

it's not Holiday Inn
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/27/05
It's a cool offbeat place but not your typical sterile, hermetically sealed hotel environment. The building is full of garish treasures, and the breakfasts are nice. If you want Holiday Inn, go book there. If you want something unique, go to the Gershwin.
