Deceiving cancellation policy
By ,
For our latest trip to Breck we decided to try the Wayside Inn instead of our usual hotel, but had to cancel due to an illness in the family. I was surprised to find that we were charged the full price for 2 nights even though we cancelled the reservation 48 hrs prior to check-in; hotel stated they have a policy that the reservation must be cancelled 14-DAYS prior. I could understand a policy such as this with a condo from a private party, but this is a hotel (most reputable places require at most a 24 hr notice). To make matters worse this policy was not stated upfront when we made the reservation, and is not on their website, which is deceiving for new customers. When I contacted the manager Mr. Gleason regarding this, he proceeded to lecture me instead of addressing the issue, which I found offensive. I guess this is what we get for trying something different - won't make this mistake again. Buyer beware.

Feb 2007 - ace
By ,
An excellent base to use if skiing all of the mountains on the Vail resorts pass. Postal parking (free), at the the base of the Peak 8 gondola, is about 5 minutes from the Wayside [use Airport parking when Postal is full, usual only at weekends - shown by signs on the outskirts of the town - and a free bus links to the gondola.] The I70 is about 10 minutes away at Frisco and that leads to Vail, Crested Butte, Keystone and Arapahoe. Copper Mtn, 5 mins from Frisco, is not on the 2007 pass. The Wayside is really friendly. A large lounge with a welcoming wood fire and endless coffee (plus spiced hot apple juice at tea time) serves as a meeting place and relaxation room. Off the lounge is a smaller breakfast room. Rooms are comfortable and warm with no shortatge of hot water. Ample parking. I'd like to think that I will return some day. Cheers to Tom and his crew. Ken

Worst Experience
By ,
I had made reservations for this place, which were the cheapest I could find on the internet. I should have realized the service would be the same as well. The first day of our reservation there was a terrible snow storm, and since I was travelling from 2-3 hours away on normal weather days in a 2-wheel drive vehicle, I knew there was no way I'd be able to safely make that trip at nighttime. I called with plenty of "heads up" and talked to the front desk and was told that it was no problem, since I couldn't control the weather. When I was able to show up the next day, some old guy (didn't even tell me who he was) just said that I had cost him a night's rate and he didn't think it was fair, so he didn't want my business at all. So he just kicked my girlfriend and I out, with no other reservations available. Nice service. Thanks

We Stay Here Every Year
By ,
This is a laid back operation, with reasonably priced clean rooms, continental breakfast, snacks provided in the afternoon, and a fire always burning in the huge lobby lodge fireplace. They don't have a concierge, but the owner knows every ski run in Summit County and beyond, and can give real advice on activities, restaurants, rentals and ski conditions.
