Worth the money

When we first arrived we were placed in a room that had mold growing in the bathroom under the sink wood cabinet, the next day they moved us no problem. Food was okay, the outside grill restaurant with the server Reynaldo was fantastic, food was hot and there isn't an extra charge unless you request lobster, filet mignon or shrimp. The hotel is in transition and therefore many items are not as listed in travel books. There isn't car/bike/moped rentals and almost every lounge chair at both the beach and pool are broken. The front desk staff are terrific, and yes it is true that Cubans would love your old clothes, soaps, pens and pencils, it is a poor country. We went horse back riding as the previous review suggested. It was a great deal $12 convertible pesos each for just over 2 hours. Although we had to book it through another tour company in the lobby as ours didn't offer it. I think though that you could probably do it a bit cheaper if you just walked out the gate yourself and booked it with the horse owners, as they seemed shocked by how much we paid and made it obvious that it would have been cheaper through them. Either way, was a great ride along the beach excetra. The food in general was alright, I certainly didn't starve. I did get tired of it, but I also work in a really nice restaurant here and am a bit spoiled. The drinks, well, if you like rum or beer you are set. If not, you can get wine at dinner or pay for some other drinks. This resort is domestic drinks only included. There are small t.v.'s in the rooms which get about 4 channels, 2 are movie like channels and it is a nice break from the sun in the late afternoon. Again, for the money, we paid under $1500 for 2 the last week in January, it was well worth it. Don't be afraid to check the other tour operators books in the lobby to find a trip/excursion that your company doesn't offer, they don't care. I would bet by next year Club Amigo will have helped to turn this hotel around from Valtur ownership. Keep an eye on this one.
